Morning all, I'm building a Pf51. I bought some ak extreme metal paint, thought it would be rude not to however for my impatience i buggered it up by not letting it cure(the paint) i think as the glue from the masking tape was affected by the paint and made it really sticky. Oh dear... I got the residue off with sticky stuff remover.

Gonna try again after rr a little sanding and another coat.

I bet the air was blue after that Paul. Think we have all been there at some point, I certainly have in wanting to move on to another stage.


At least you were able to remove the residue. Good luck with the next coat , I've never used that paint before but have seen some stunning results .Hope you will post some photos .

As John says we have all been there. Impatient to get on. In some ways I blame "what it says on the tin". I have been using a varnish that says 'dry in 15 minutes'. Touch dry maybe but needs at least 24 hours to cure.

yes, been there, done that! Nowadays I let the primer cure for a day, then the topcoat cure for a day, before even thinking about masking - it means things take longer, but it's better for your blood pressure!

Question: Which tape did you use. Even Tamiya tape can be a pain at times.
My simple guide.
Let the paint cure for at least 24 hours.
Use a good low tac tape like Tamiya's. Start buy laying some strips down on a clean smooth surface. laminate table top, Glass, anything clean and glossy. Lift the tape and place it down a few times to remove some of the stickiness. Some run the tape between their finger and thumb, others (non-hairy types) put it on the back of their hand or arm.
Place the tape lightly on the subject and only firmly press down at the edge that is to be painted against.
Remove the tape as soon as you have finished the painting.

I use Tamiya and dab it a few times on my forehead.... it retains just enough stickiness to do the job.

... and no, I don't leave it stuck on my forehead in case I have to answer the door or nip out.
