I remember hearing about this on a "WW2 pilots tell their stories" type program ages ago, i checked on the t'interweb and my memory worked !! They were markings to help in flying in formation, apparently (and this is off a web site) the yellow wingtips and tails were an experiment by No. 1 Group in 1944

Thanks Colin. Strange as you would have thought that this would have been counter to camouflage. Just wonder if this is for the Lancs. which were used as a Tactical ?! weapon on Caen in I think July 44. To give identification markings for the allied ground forces.
