I have now had a go at a couple of Axis and British aircraft from WW2, and thought it was about time that the Americans joined in. So here we are, the US Navy Corsair F4U-1D.

I am looking forward to having a go at gentle weathering with this all over blue aircraft. But first the cockpit and engine......

Tamiya XF-4 was airbrushed for all of the cockpit interior which was then highlighted with Tamiya weathering light sand. The shadows areas were picked out with a wash of 1 part brown and 2 parts dark dirt. The seat got some gentle silvering to show some wear with an artists silver pencil.

Most of the parts from the Eduard Zoom PE set was used to give a bit of life to the cockpit. The rest of the tiny PE parts are in the carpet somewhere .

Once assembled, the whole area was given a dusting with matt varnish to even up the contrast somewhat. The instruments received a drop of Gator Glue into the apertures, which dried clear and shiny to give a fair representation of the glass in the flight instruments.

Of course, most of this detail will be hidden when placed in the fuselage. But we at least now have a record of the work done.

The Engine was airbrushed with MrMetalColor Dark Iron and then the raised detail was buffed lightly to give an impression of more detail.

The pilot has been painted but I am not sure if I will use him yet.

As always, comments and observations are welcomed.

Much appreciated guys. I'm taking my time with this one :)

I have often been a little guilty of rushing somewhat - but I just want to see the final result!

I want to mount it on a carrier deck base. Any ideas of what to use?

I'm going to be watching this one take shape, the F4U is one of my favourite WWII planes and I'm planning on getting a 1:48 kit too.

Looking great so far, eager to see more!

Looking good Graham.

I'm sure you already know but just in case, keep in mind the American Carriers had planked decks......Which is why they had such a mauling from Kamakaze attacks.

British carries had armoured decks........as far as my readings lead me to believe.

Cheers,

Ron

Thanks Ron. I always like to have input from other modellers.

I think I read somewhere that some of the wooden decks were tinted a blue colour.

Here are some snaps of the next most interesting part of this build.

All went together very well, minimal filler was used on the seams and it was all sanded down and polished. A good clean all over with airbrush cleaner and a cotton bud got rid of any dust and fingerproints from the sanding process. After some masking, the fuselage, wings and other ancilliaries were given a coat of Vallejo grey surface primer. This highlighted a few imperfections which were sorted out before the next stage.

Panel lines were given the pre-shade treatment with Tamiya X1 black. The underside was also gentle darkened overall to give a daylight shadow feel. The panels were then gently and randomly given a spray of light blue and dark blue grey, to break up the main dark blue scheme when it is applied. Metaliser Aluminium plate was painted in strategic places which dries very hard. This allows some silver to show through for chipping later if you wish, rubbing the top coat off with a sharpened cocktail stick.

Graham this is going to be a stunner, I like the floating office some neat photoshop going on there? keep the images coming.

Looking very nice. I built the 1:72 version some years ago and always meant to try the larger offering.
