A question about JV 44 aircraft, would the red & white banding been applied over the factory RLM 76 or over a NMF?


I'm specifically wondering about Red 4, as it was previously Werknummer 2200.

My understanding is that the red and White underside were painted on in the field, AS the pilots where tried of getting shot at by Their own AA guns. So my guess is it was painted over the existing paintwork.

Yep. RLM 76. This was a field conversion. The Doras were delivered straight from the factory with a finish of RLM 74,75,76, then were painted with the own squadron's own customisations at the airfield

The undersides of the JV 44 aircraft were RLM 76, but this was not the case for all Dora's there were many variations, including unpainted areas.


I am going from memory but the upper surfaces were certainly not 74/75. Not all were the same,some had a combinations of 75/83, others 82/83. Some may have had a mixture of both combinations, but I'd have to check. You need to check some references, the schemes were complicated. I can do this for you in a couple of days if you like.

Thanks Steve, but please don't go to any trouble! I was only wondering for the purposes of weathering. I've already done my Dora in 82/83 with the red & white underside.

By the end of the war, For the Luftwaffe, the painting schemes had gone a little random. There were many variations of the schemes, as you said.
