Hello , I have never built a model from scratch ,and I am going to build the entire wtc complex "twin towers" including all wtc buildings and the plaza at the bottom , I plan on it lighting up to show the towers true beauty, as far as I know no one has down this before . I was wondering to find an online UK based seller that ships to house ,that specialize in Balsa wood as I am currently seeking a large thickish 2 foot 10 inch by 2 foot 10 inch sheet of wood to act as the base for the model. right.. wtc 1 and 2 will be around 34 inches tall but wtc 1 will have an extra 2-3 inches for the antenna. I have already designed a basic true to life scale of the model in google sketchup thank you.

ok nice one....but where do the tanks go....lol.

Interesting idea.

Why balsa. and why does it have to be delivered. I would think that the size of this project a DIY store is the place to shop.

Well I suppose , because Balsa is light and easy to work with but strong and sturdy aswell as cheap

i would think about plywood for the base and you could get a half sheet from most builders merchants.balsa would have to be glued together to get a piece that wide and just has not got enough strengh, it would snap with the grain the first time you picked it up. the buildings would probably be fine in balsa but you need a strong and sturdy base as you say in your last post and a three foot square piece of balsa is neither.

I use balsa a lot and it's suprisingly tough when glued into a structure.

In my opinion the buildings would be fine being made out of approx 1/4 inch (4" wide) strips.

The base however, i have to agree with Andrew, it needs to be plywood / MDF / chipboard etc. (I have a 40" spaceship on the go and the centre strut it's built around had to be solid wood or it would have snapped during construction)

Anyway, an unusual subject and i will be interested to see how it progresses ... keep updating your build thread as you go please Duncan(?)

Hi and welcome to the forum mate.

Interesting build Duncan, you're right I've never seen anyone do the WTC before.

Do you have a local model shop, art supply shop or DIY store ?, If you can get to one of these they might be able to help with build supplies. But if you need to have the stuff delivered that might push the price up some what.

Best of luck with the model.

Tony.

My town is useless for anything to do with models, online is my best option , the build itself may take awhile for me to start maybe after christmas because I've got my final school exams and what not, but I may build a scaled paper model of it to see what I will be working with , and thank you I will look into alternate woods for the base , Your kidn comments are apreciated .
