discussion Packing?....And how!

Postie arrived yesterday with a kit I ordered.


Here is a picture of the kit and packaging.....The box measures 22" X 22" X 12" deep. The kit 14" X 9" X 2" deep. What a ridiculous waste of materials, not to mention postage cost.

It is a waste of packaging,but it will cost them the same to post a small package or that big box, it is a little bit overkill

If you see how these packages are handled you would understand. If the item arrives damaged the first complaint goes to the sender who has no responsibility for it after posting so it pays to be over kill to maintain customer satisfaction rather than sending a replacement then trying to claim off the delivery company.

Dave is correct I worked in warehouses distributing everything from toys to car parts and it pays to over pack

I agree that items have to be nearly bomb proof when posting, but surely a box less than half the size as this one, with the kit nicely contained by, say just six of those green thingies, instead of the around 50 actually present, would have sufficed?


It just seems like a lot of unnecessary packing.

Thing is Ron you wouldn't believe how dim some lorry loaders are , me and you would put a light weight parcel on the top but some not so bright would put it on the bottom , those extra blisters would help it still arrive intact

Alan, that's an awful thing to state about lorry loaders. I'll have you know I have an Oxford Uni. 1st Class Honours Degree in that very subject.


I also have an equally good Academic qualification in Skip Filling, so there.......


But I take your point.

Alan's right, the money spent on that packaging is way less than the cost of a claim by the customer. The companies sending goods out this way are reacting to some bad eggs working in the distribution industry.


Most people doing this kind of work are sensible & respect the goods they handle, but I've seen boxes kicked 30 feet just because it was marked "fragile".

We ship loads of small electronic components and PCBs out ......... Some of them are no bigger than a cigarette packet. But they get outer packed into big boxes with shedloads of packing. It needs to get there in 1 peice.


Customers look at our stuff and if it arrives damaged then they blame us. They aren't interested in whether or not the carrier busted it or not. It's our fault............ and there is pretty much no comeback with any of the carriers.


A lot of Companies do it. Amazon, RS Components ........ and you should see the packing of stuff we get from Boeing. That is "Biblical".

You're not alone in being dismayed by the amounts of packaging used Ron. I think it's scandalous, but unfortunately part of modern life. I keep what I get & reuse it for when I send something out.

Amazon are good at this but they just use yards of scrunched up paper. Suppose it saves them having to have too many box sizes at each packing station.

I expect they're saving money by only having a few different, standard sized boxes. Revell have been doing that for years!

Quite often when I get deliveries from Hornby they put kits in boxes way too big for them but they then squash that many airbags in that it ends up damaging the boxes in side.
