I really want to here what the greens and the fish have to say .............................it could be the best joke I've ever heard :D

I never argue politics.... Each to there own..... But I did enjoy Jeremy paxmans destruction of Ed Milliband on C4.... Wouldn't vote for that muppet regardless of which party he represented.

I love to see politicians squirm , I must admit Ed militant I mean milliband hasn't got a clue as to what the working class want , there all detached from real life but this bloke is so detached he's got the only house on the island

I still tell people to have real change don't vote

Your and my right to vote has been bought and defended with much blood, as has your right not to vote, but be careful what you might inadvertently allow in through the back door. If you don't vote then you may have changes in which you have had no say imposed on you. You might not like them much. Ultimately 'change' might be imposed by a minority, and that's the first step on the road to totalitarianism :)

If no one exercises their right to vote why bother having it ? It's the sort of argument that Hitler, Stalin or Pol Pot would have understood.

Cheers

Your right Steve the point I was making and I admit I should have made myself more clear is for everyone not to vote , every time I speak to people and politics comes up they always moan about the government either doing something they shouldn't or not doing what they should then a real message needs to be sent and the only one they would understand is if we all wrote none of the above on the bottom of the ballot paper and put a cross next to that

Never happen I know but be good if it did , I'm a floating voter because ive worked it out and my vote goes to the party that will do what's best for the country , only problem with that is they are lying toe rags that don't give a stuff about any of us or the country and just do what they want due to them following an ideology

The only other way is to use a protest vote in the locals , I do this sometimes to send a message but I always vote for a main party in the generals :)

That's cool Alan. Anybody is entitled to forego their right to vote (though obviously you don't).

The problem is when politics and politicians become so disconnected from the realities of our everyday lives, or become so similar, all forming policies on what they think we'll vote for rather than on any principles, that many people become so disenchanted that they don't vote. We are in that situation at the moment and the antics of the political class (expenses fraud, cash for questions, politicians showing open disdain, calling policemen 'plebs' and all sorts of other corruption) don't help. I entirely understand why many people don't bother. Most of the people I work with are somewhat younger than me and of those who are prepared to state a position NONE intend to vote. This is not just disappointing, history teaches us that it can be dangerous.

Cheers

The Greens will want us to give up our cars and central heating ........ knit our own clothes and make our own shoes out of recycled potato skins ,,,,,,,,

As someone who has been actively involved in politics since 1974, though I play little part these days, I fully understand the low opinion in which todays politicians are held. Likewise I appreciate and understand the cynisism about them and what they say.

That said, Steve is right. We should all vote - it is important that we do so as democracy is a precous, rare and fragile commodity.

My own main beef about politics today is how freedom of speech has been undermined significantly since 1997. Not only do we see politically correct bullying trying to force people into a particular world view, but the law is also being used as a weapon in this. The appalling action of a certain particular MP reporting Katie Hopkin to the police for critisising him for postuering with a Pakistani flag is merely the latest example.

This tendancy is also helping create a generation bland politicians who's only 'virtue' is not to cause offense by fitting into the establishments straight jacket. This is regardless of Party.

Whatever you do, vote. Through not voting you actually encourge the most disreputable elements in politics who do not really care about democracy and freedom except to pay lip-service.

These and the snp are the most dangerous parties in GB , they promote anarchy and are maybe the most fascist parties in Britain today

Oh Boy  Seems like you guys suffer from almost the same problems we have except you govt. doesn't seem to be in open warfare against it's people as our present admin. is. Lets face it chaps ,all kidding aside, do you REALLY want to see a world without America! That's what's coming about, we're alienating our allies and giving aid and comfort to the enemy .......GOD HELP US!

..........The Politicians play games with each other for their own personal agenda, learn & know nothing about history, and don't give a damn about any of us Jim ........ They are all the same the world over (some have fatter Swiss Bank accounts than others) ......... They just pay lip service to a different flag is all.

The only things a politicians worry about are;

What's in it for me.

How much can I claim on expenses without being caught.

How good do I look on TV.

How much money can I make.

There is this thing that people think of the people who govern them as aliens ( oh yes some will take their opportunity here). You voted them in. Even if you did not vote you still voted the government in by not voting. Think of that you voted the government in.

The next mystery is politics as if it is something remote from life. Something which does not concern the people or self. It is the aliens again in the ether.

Politics is the policies of the way we live our lives. To cast it aside as "politics" as if it is not your problem is rather silly as those that do are allowing the others to decide on how you live your life.

For those who do not vote and allow others to run their a question. Would you allow some one else to choose the colour of your car. What you eat etc etc all very low priorities. But not voting or taking an interest in politics is allowing others to run your way of life which to me is of paramount importance.

On corruption. There is always a minority who are going to "take the biscuit" which is not theirs. Amongst the 600 MPs there are a small percentage of rogues this is typical of society in general.

Of interest answer this question. Would you take on being an MP knowing that you could make a better standard of living outside parliament and end up more wealthy ? Would you chucking in your job to become an MP knowing that after 5 years you may be rejected by the voters and find yourself without being able to resume in the work you gave up to be an MP.

Last if not satisfied with the system why not try to re-arrange it rather than moan. If not you have no case to grumble. How many belong to a party to change ideas. How many have been to a party meeting (which ever party). How many know their MPs name ? How many have been to see their MP to complain ? How many watch programmes about the politics governing our lives not just now but for the last five years ? How many know what their local government are doing ?

Have you delegated the way you live to others ?

Laurie

Can I just hop in here and remind every one that the forum rules, few that they are do not allow political debate.

So before the to and fro begins. Dont.

So far so good but keep it light and pleasant and do not start dissing and promoting. That will get this thread removed in 0,5 seconds.

Thank you.

Can you clear something up for me concerning US politics Jim

Is it true that if your rich enough or backed by enough influential people you can buy the presidency?

If so 1 it explanes how George W Bush Jr. got elected and 2 it's not democratic is it

Thanks ian for the heads up , I think we've shown that we actually can have a talk about things of this nature and not get involved in silliness, maybe the politicians could learn a thing or two from this site :)

Whatever your political views please vote. Think carefully about the issues and vote for the party that you believe will serve the interests of the people best. Just remember how powerful a thing a vote is and that people have died to have that right. Also bear in mind the saying, that for evil to flourish, it only requires good men to do nothing.
