Scale Model Shop

Posting unsolicited photos on a thread.

I'm in two minds about this one.
Posting an unsolicited picture on someone else's thread could be considered to be a bit like showing off, that however could also be a double edged sword, as the person whose thread has been "highjacked" could perhaps produce a better looking model than theirs, which would be a bit embarrassing.
Does it bother me personally? no not really, I'm comfortable in my own skin.

Having got that out of the way...
Thanks Ian taking time out of your busy schedule of “Ranting” to explain this to me but some one already was kind enough to do that. If you picking up on my sarcasm your right Ol’Chap.

If I was of a mind to share an image or two of any of my work to help someone with a tip or two, which has happened in the past
I just go the PM route, easy and confidential.:relieved:

Jim.

On the other hand, with my recent poor efforts it would make the other build look even better lol

Must admit that I find it annoying when your blog gets spammed with other peoples pictures.

I also find it rude when others are dismissive about a particular technique you use or a style of painting or a tool you like to use.
If you don’t like it and you’ve not been asked for your opinion then be a good fellow and button it.

Yep, we all have preferences, some we agree with others we don't. Is it okay to add a few lines to suggest why your preference is more valid? Although that could lead to a number of problems, being patronised is one, I was in a forum elsewhere and given basic modelling tips despite my build posts showing I have quite a bit of modelling experience and can apply multiple complex techniques. Is it better just to give advice only when it's asked for?

In my mind, absolutely. Otherwise it's just rude.
Totally agree Andy.
It used to be quite popular among the various forums to include ‘all comments welcome’ or ‘feedback welcome’ at the bottom of your posts/threads.
Maybe we could adopt something similar?

Surely, a forum is a place for discussions and putting "all comments welcome" etc is unecessary. Perhaps, if you do not want comments, then say "No comments welcome" or else don't post on forums! ;)

Thats why theres a 'critique corner' on the forum......we went thro this years ago and this sub forum was created so comments....good or bad......could be posted

Of course discussions are welcome, it’s more the tone of the discussion.

Someone telling me my panzer grey is incorrect or pointing out that the kit your building doesn't have all the correct rivets is a bit rude by my book.
I wouldn’t do it in real life, so I wouldn’t do it here.

Exactly.

Most builds on here are posted in a blog, that's just the author showing what they have been up to. Having someone chipping in saying you are doing it wrong, or telling you what you should be doing next just isn't sportsman like.

Yes, I'm sure some of these people genuinely think that they are being helpful, but it isn't help if you haven't asked for it, it's interfering. I'd go as far as saying condescending.

It used to really wind me up, I just wanted to enjoy making my models my way, without the constant fear of someone pulling it to pieces. Thankfully after a few wise words from some of our more established members (and some strong anti-anxiety meds) I now just ignore it wherever possible.

If the unsolicited advice or critique has upset me too much, I'll just cease to blog that particular build and finish it "in private" :smiling3:

That happened to me recently, just spoiled the flow of the build thread, so I abandoned it, when I'm done I'll post the completed build in the appropriate section

To me a build thread is a personal thing where others can follow along, others think differently. Not a lot I can do about that really, c'est la vie!

Miko (not at the bench much recently)

Jacking someone's build thread is a Bozo no-no, imho, but it does happen. I try not to post anything but constructive comments and only ref pics if asked by the builder himself. Common courtesy is the key here. I think most of us are on the same page with this. I will not, however, abandon a thread, but address the individual as politely as possible, as to their intrusion and carry on. I won't let another rule my build, not a chance.

Sometimes it's about reading the forum, and reading the thread owner, especially if you're new. I've been on forums were nobody batted an eyelid at people posting photo's in their threads, and other's like this where it's a definite no (so apologies again for committing that particular faux-Pas here).

Personally, it's never bothered me and I've often just considered it all part of the conversations we start - because surely having conversations with people is the point of being on a forum. That being said, if I posted a completed photo and then someone else posted a photo of their build and pointed out why it was so much better, then yeah, that would annoy me.

Unsolicited advice is an interesting one. I like it, but it depends on how it's delivered. I really enjoyed my conversations with Jakko and the like on my recent Sherman build, learning about the issues with the kit and Shermans in general was fascinating and made the build much more enjoyable. But I have had threads on other forums in the past, and I'm thinking about one individual here (thankfully not on this forum) who can actually be quite rude about pointing out the inaccuracies of your build or the kit in general - often just after the builder has posted completed pictures. I can think of at least one occasion where somebody has binned a completed build because of it.

Again, just like in real life, a lot of it is about reading people.
