Greetings O Cognoscenti! I can foresee the need to invite people to engage in a brief PM in the near future but, having the tech skills of an Andalusian Aardvark, I have no idea how to set this up. I would be grateful if somebody could explain, preferably in words of one syllable, the process. Many thanks!

I find a post by the person I want to pm. Click on the avatar/name. A box will appear and at the bottom it says "start conversation". Click that and away you go.

Alternatively, click on the conversations icon (envelope) then select 'start a new conversation' and start to type in the username of the forum member. As you start to type it will bring up the available options until we find the one you want.
