Bought 2 tinlets of humbrol no. 19 (red gloss) paint recently.

Paint in neither tin will dry after 3 days. Worse, it looks gritty. Have tried different brushes and painted on different surfaces, problems still persist. 9 times out of 10, red can be used direct out of tin without stirring. Not this time! Both tins now in rubbish bin.

Anybody else had similar problems?

Regards Mick

Yes, it turned out the manufacturing of Humbrol was transferred to The Far East, with dire consequences!

I believe the making of the paint now elsewhere.

As an add-on, can anyone post how to recognise a 'foreign made' tinlet, so we all know the difference when purchasing the said paint?

I use this paint alot and i have had no problems with it however i have like you paint that takes ages to dry,and i will see what i can find out about the foreign made tins

I would suggest a letter to Humbrol. They have pulled the production back to England as there was a great many complaints about the "Chinese ones".

As to how to identify the "Made in England" question, is that not what there should be on the tin: Made In England

The label on one tinlet states 'Enamel' and I have another, later paint which states 'Super Enamel'

Perhaps the latter is the Far Eastern version?

Hi all! I'm a returning modeller. I last painted "in anger" when I was in my teens - more than 38 years ago! I always used Humrol in the past. However, recently made up two kits and ordered up some Humbrol - Silver 11, Matt insignia red, lemon matt, trainer yellow,.... I have tried all now and I'd say that they fall way behind what I remember as a boy. Yes, I mixed thoroughly - shaking and then with sprue to give it good stir. I've done a mix of brush and airbrush and they are all dull. The silver is particularly so..... So, Mr Humbrol, get your act together or get out of the kitchen!

Martin I feel your pain. I bought a tinlet of Silver 11 which used to be, well, silver. This was actually a rather nasty grey colour and not in the least metallic.

I think that the picture Peter posted is self explanatory. "Made in the UK" is just that, hopefully quality will be better.

Other enamel users might want to take a look at the White Ensign Colourcoat range. I use them extensively and like them a lot. That's not an advert, I have no interest in the company, I'm just interested in some decent paint.

Cheers

Steve
