Every body talks about going into space etc.But has any one thought first of going to the centre of earth and finding out what is there. :P

After all if surgeons can slide things thro arteries and veins from the nether regions into the heart it is not beyond the wit of man to travel to the centre of the earth.

I believe Jules Verne did it ages ago...... Dinosaurs and stuff down there. I seem to recall there was a waterfall as well ........

It is easy to forget that the people who made that art, thousands of years ago, are essentially just like Goya, Caravaggio, Rembrandt or Banksy :)
So we agree. They painted what they saw..... lol

LOL thats right up there with the headlines that North Korea have successfully landed a manned mission on the Sun.... LOL

I love the idea of aliens (Predator & Alien), but in reality, here on earth, no..... Statistically speaking there is life out there somewhere in one form or another, but not here, but for the sake off this thread lets say there is.

A far off civilization that has been around for hundreds of thousands of years, so technologically advanced that they have conquered space travel, and can flit from one galaxy to another in the blink of an eye, and on their travels come across us, so what do they do?.... Destroy us, enslave us, use us as batteries...... Or give us world peace, enlighten us, give us a cure for all diseases and offer immortality....... No, what they give us is anal probing and crop circles........ Not quite war of the worlds is it.

Long post: sorry. I agree with Steve (Stona). Some additional thought on the lifespans of intelligent life. I think that the human race will last about another 150 years (perhaps less in view of the present accelerating rate of scientific advance) before severe constraints build up such as depletion of physical resources, pollution, conflict between nations etc. stop further big-scale scientific and technological advances. Before that decline bites, forcing us to turn to survival strategies, we have, say, another 100 years from now to launch a number of manned space flights to other stars. Suppose we launch 20 such missions. These would have to be be aimed in different directions. The chances of one of these being detected by other intelligent life must be minute given the vastness of space.

Even if we aimed accurately, the nearest planet so far detected that could support advanced life is about 500,000 light years away. At a quarter of the speed of light it would take 2 million years to reach that planet. (Propulsion energy problems perhaps?) Also, with a new generation of space travellers every 25 years, that would take 80,000 years and half a million generations for one to be alive on arrival. Mutation during that time could be a problem, and no scientific laboratories on board to solve them. Also, there would be a problem of strife between our space travellers during that time.

From this, I think that the chances of sending humans to another planet are effectively zero. The same applies to other intelligent life doing the same and succeeding in aiming at us and getting here. So no green men here.

We (or other life forms) could of course simply send radio signals demonstrating intelligent life (as we have, once), including the value of pi and other mathematical truths. That would overcome the problem of keeping humans alive. But the number of such signals needed, aimed all over the cosmos (to have a fair chance of hitting intelligent life) would be truly enormous (unless such life was almost everywhere). The same but in reverse applies to those sending messages to us.

So, no aliens or signals arriving, especially given the only 150 years of human life span (see above) during which we could detect such signals.

An interesting thought: assuming that intelligent life is fairly common, we can imagine the universe at any one time as having people in various parts sending signals that no one else would ever detect, partly because of the aiming problem and partly because of the short lifespan of intelligent life being able to detect signals. Even if we did detect signals, any reply would take half a million years to reach even the relatively close planet mentioned above, by which time the senders would have had died out. They would never receive a reply. I think that is very sad. Another interesting thought: if we sent a signal today, any intelligent life at the receiving end would not have emerged yet.

But what about worm holes, a passage to another place at another time? We've got about 100 years to discover them and use them. Start now.

It's obvious we've already been invaded by aliens.Anyone who works or deals with the general public on a daily basis will have first hand knowledge of this.Best way to spot new aliens amongst us. 1. hang around a customer service dept in any retail store and watch for unusual behaviour.2 take a trip on any form of public transport and see how the aliens/monsters behave on that. Many aliens/monsters are out in high numbers on our road network systems during mornings/evenings (school run ) For the doubters amongst us you guys need to take a close look at our politicians for some strange and out of this world behaviour and even closer to home the wife as their logic and reasoning as to seriously be out of this world and from another planet live long and prosper regards Krull sorry John

Me .............. I'm for focussing our efforts on locating the "Clangers" ....................

............ "What's that you say Tiny Clanger" ........... "Oh the value of Pi, Yes ...... "The number π is a mathematical constant, the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, commonly approximated as 3.14159. It has been represented by the Greek letter "π" since the mid-18th century, though it is also sometimes spelled out as "pi" ........ "You are a clever little sausage aren't you Tiny Clanger......."

If it was 3am, after a box of beers and much to eat, the stars are out, everyone is off their nut. Yep, now this conversation makes perfect sense.

I think it'd take a lot of beer Joe.

I once had a conversation with Sy Liebergot-the Nasa flight controller-Apollo 13 among many others, met him at a convention. And we got talking about life out there-he told me that it was 100% that life had to exist in various stages of development, however the distances to travel made it very difficult-however, he did say that look what we did with Apollo in such a short amount time with the technology that they had then-core-rope memory, basic digital technology-state of the art but your I-phone does more than they could have dreamed of back then-so we have technology to go further, but to the stars-that is going to take some severe head-scratching.

A few years ago when I lived in US ........ I took a trip to the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. Awesome place .......

While I was there I grabbed a hotdog from the open air food court. There was an Astronaut type blokey (perfect physical specimen, a brain the size of a planet and looked like Buck Rogers) on a little stage with a microphone talking about Astronaut type stuff........... When he finished he asked if anyone had any questions. So I stuck my hand up...... "Yes Sir" says Buck Rogers" What's your name?" ......... So I told him, and after we did the stuff about being from England, and no I didn't know the Queen personally....... He asked me what my question was ??? ........ So, here I am eating a hotdog, and I said..........

"I've been in this country now for around nine months, and I relly do enjoy being here. Everyone I've met have been fantastic and very welcoming. Now I've travelled around a bit and pretty much in any Gas Station you can get a hotdog for a Dollar" ..... Buck Rogers is Smiling and nodding his head in agreement ........ "So, can you tell me why, to get a hotdog here, I've just paid five bucks" .............

Now Buck Rogers is an Astronaut, the best of the best ........ He didn't drop a beat. But said .............. Thaankyou Peter, unfortunately that doesn't come under my remit so, Perhaps you could address that enquiry in writing to our catering department.......... As I'm sure they would be happy to assist"........

Brilliant.......... That man's training was worth every dime of the American Taxpayers money.

Peter

.... The Space Centre was amazing ........ The have a full size replica of a Saturn V hanging horizontal in a huge hangar ........ that thing is enormous ...... and a replica of "Mission Control" as it was for Apollo 11 (that we all watched on black and white tv when we were kids) complete with Gene Kranz waistcoat hang on the back of a chair ....... and they were moving a space shuttle on that big old tracked platform over to the Launchpad at 1/4 walking pace....

A great day out.

Peter

I think we are too eager to believe science there used to be a dinosaur in crystal palace park that was supposed to be a life size replica of the real thing it had two spikes on its nose(can't remember what it was called) but they found an intact skeleton and discovered the spikes on its nose should have been on its hands. It was like that for years. Now they say our closest star to us is four light years away as if it's a fact, when, in fact it's just a theory. I mean to know that for sure you would need a light powerful enough to shoot a beam of light at it and then have someone monitor it for upto 8 years to get the response. And of course it's getting further away all the time, as if you listen to the scientists space is expanding all the time. No I think space is smaller that we think. And we have been visited, in fact I think we are the result of cross breeding with aliens.

I've always wondered about the 'Big Bang' theory. What made it go bang?
Ahhhh, imagine if you will, taking every single thing in the known universe, rocks, particles, atoms, you and me and compressing them down into something so infinitely small and dense that it beggars belief..... Now this is called a singularity and where it all began, now it wasnt just sitting there in the middle of nowhere, waiting...... Because there wasnt anywhere for nowhere to exsist:confused:..... It just popped into exsistance, exploded and created time and space as it went...... Scientists can tell you what happened after like a millionth of a second..... But they dont have a clue before that.... Idiots.

Wow...... I read to much, Bill Bryson: a short history of nearly everything, just a fantastic book..... Complex stuff explained in laymens terms;)
