I recently returned to model making after 30-something years. I thought I would be dreadful at it and that it would be like starting all over again, but it wasn't. I have surprised myself in how easily I have taken to it again, and my first works since coming back are better than anything I ever made before. That has given me the confidence to not fear something more challenging, and that has me wanting to go back to ships and ships with some photo-etch.

I was always an aircraft and ship guy, and despite favouring aircraft in real life, for some reason, I always preferred building ships when it came to models. This has seen me researching plastic model ship kits, and this has led me to be attracted to some of the more modern Flyhawk deluxe kits with some photo-etching of British warships, but it's also seen me a little baffled. I mean, where on earth do you buy these from in the UK? They just don't seem to exist here. Scalemates often direct me to a Polish retailer, but surely they are easier to get hold of than this? They also seem to be hard to get, even in those places abroad that do seem to sell them. Any advice on sourcing these for my future knowledge would be appreciated.

Also, since I'm here.... Which producers of plastic warship kits do you recommend? I see that Tamiya offer some relatively new releases with PE, but they seem to be Japanese and American ships, which I will be happy to visit at some point, but right now I would like to get hold of one or two British vessels. Trumpeter seems to have a range. How do they compare?

Welcome,
I built trumpeters 1/350 hms cornwall a whileback and it was a nice kit, upgrading the masts are a good idea if your planning on rigging as the kit ones are a bit flimsy.

Hannants don't, but Super-hobby.co.uk seem to stock a range, as well as a lot of other ranges I would love to fill my pre-dreadnought desires with...

Still, I miss White Ensign. And the days when postage from mainland Europe didn't cost more than the item!

That kit appeals to me. Nice suggestion. I have added it to my wishlist for consideration.

Hi....Have you tried Hannants? or our very own SMS? see link at top...
I have looked at both, and SMS does not seem to stock Flyhawk, and neither does Hannants. That Hannants website is something of a time machine, I must say. Reminds me of the 90's internet.

Correct, but that Super Hobby website isn't really a UK website. It's that Polish company I mentioned previously.
