did any hurricanes that belonged to RAF North Africa fly with fuselage roundel with just the blue white red target ?

I've just wrecked one of mine but I don't have a large enough one with the yellow trim

Any help is much appreciated:)

Wait for a few minutes and Steve (Stona) will come to the rescue. He knows everything about the RAF etc!

Sorry mate but I'm sure that the yellow edge was on all RAF birds by that time.

That's what I figured Ian all my reference material and searches came up with the same info

Guess I'll get the spitfire decals from Hannants , I only need the roundels and there the only ones I can find in 1/32 scale

Thanks Ian

Thanks for that Adrian but unfortunately its 1/32 scale , I have about five pairs in 1/48 but the only 1/32 I have are the under wing ones

Thanks for the offer though mate I appreciate it :)

Alan, I shall rummage in the spare decal box in the morning. I'm pretty confident (not 100%) that I saw some suitable decals in there earlier. If I do have them I'll post them off. If the Royal Mail keep up the good work you won't have long to wait :)

Cheers

Are you sure Steve you've already sent me the underside one ?

I don't want people to think I'm just on the scrounge,

Nobody will think that !

If I've got them in a box you might as well have them to put on a model. I've got a few RAF decals accrued over the years which I'll never use.

Cheers

I know nothing about planes didn't even know they had yellow round the roundels, what did that signify.

I don't know Ken I think and I must admit I don't know for sure but the roundels on early aircraft were the target sort on the wings and fuselage up until the mid thirties then had a yellow ring around the fuselage and sometimes under the wings while the top of the wings had a big blue circle with a red centre , how and when this happened I'm unsure of

I never understood the red and blue roundel thing the British flag is red white and blue why did they do away with the white or am I opening a can of worms.

As joe says it was most probably a camo thing two dark colours would be indistinguishable from a white and non reflective

White was done away with, on upper-wing surfaces, so as not to compromise the camouflage. Merging with the background, while parked, was of paramount importance, so any reflective colour was unwelcome (propeller blades went black for the same reason.)

Yellow was added to the fuselage roundel to make it stand out from the camouflage, but only as you got closer; it was soon found that the yellow and white, on bombers, was too reflective in searchlight beams, so the rings were made thinner, and fighters eventually followed suit.

In Europe in 1945, recognition became critical, so the white was put back into the upper-wing roundel, with yellow added as well, in some cases (though the Air Ministry were not happy, but they eventually yielded.)

You guys really do know your stuff, they should send students to forums like this for research they would get more info off here than Google and more accurate too.

And don't forget that the red centre was removed from the roundels in the Far East (SEAC) to avoid any confusion with the Japanese 'hinomaru' !

As Edgar has intimated, any recognition markings, including of course national markings, were a compromise between visibility and camouflage.

Alan, some roundels are on their way, well, I say on their way, I doubt they'll set of until Monday :)

Cheers

Oh yeah I forgot about the Pacific theatre, in some cases they made the red dot very small

Thanks again Steve I appreciate it :)
