Hi Guys

I have finished the first figure and he is on place, here are some photos:

Next, the first German

can anybody answer a question for me: i would like to paint one of the Germans with a camoflaged helmet - does anybody know when they started to paint cammo on their helmets and whether havign one in a trench setting like this would be correct?

Peter

I'm no expert but as far as I know after the Germans dispensed with the pickelhaub spiked helmet in 1915 they went with the standard classic German style helmet through to the end of the war. It would therefore seem reasonable to assume that at least some were painted in camo through 1916, 1917 and 1918.

Hi John

that's what I thought, but somewhere in the back of my mind is a thought that only certaint troops had cammo helmets, but I know so little about WW1 I don't trust my memory!

Hi Peter,
Sorry I've not been on for a while. The camo helmets are connected particularly with storm-troopers who I believe began to appear in about 1916. What I am sure is that it will fit in with your diorama. Go for it! It's nice to add a bit of colour!

Hi Guys

a short update for the moment - started work on the first German:

As with the Tommy I fixed the hands to the rifle rather than to the arms so they need to be painted with the rifle and firted into place. The idea is that he will be cowering against the rear wall of the tench (Andy B - is there a more correct term fo the rear wall of a trench?) looking up ag the tank which is about to drive over his part of the trench.

hopefully I can get the hands done and him in place tonight.

Hi Peter,
Your guy has puttees and boots (rather than Jackboots) so puts him later war when resources were running out because our naval blockade starved them. The coloured helmet is very fitting. The tank appeared in 1916 of course, so all is in keeping. The rear soil pile was called a 'Parados', so the wall is the parados wall (or just parados too). Front soil pile (and wall) is parapet. Your tank is driving over the parapet which
(My book will explain all this - plug, plug! - sorry!)
Your tank is a Mk IV, (I think) so your diorama will be 1917- 18 with all details matching that.
