Guys, I think I am going to start this kit. It's one that I've had at the back of the cupboard for a couple of years now. Before I get going on it I wanted to ask if any of you have any experience of building this?

It takes me weeks and weeks to build my models, I am a slow worker! If anyone thinks it's a bad kit, I'd rather put that time into another one.

I'd quite like to do an F14 so do you think I would be better off getting a Hasewega as I would like to put a few after market mods in such as the cockpit.

Phil, I haven't built that one, but I did do Revells 1/48 ' Black Tomcat ' and I wish I hadn't!

Horrible instructions, badly molded, tons of flash & ill-fitting parts were the order of the day! Hopefully yours is a better kit.

Been progressing recently over the Christmas break. Have made a start on the cockpit and have purchased a set of Hasegawa carrier deck crew so will have a couple of smart looking pilots in the Tomcat when built. I will try to post progress pics when I can. I'm quite excited about the build but the raised panel lines concern me.

Hi Aaron. I am not sure what to do. I have never rescribed panel lines. I'm a bit worried I would ruin the kit if I made a mess of it. Perhaps easier to just leave them but then I don't know how to apply any weathering effects to raised lines.

I haven't started yet due to finding the right colors but I want to build Josef Priller fw. It's a classic hasegawa 1.32 My comfort zone is Armour so I'm in no hurry to offend aircraft builders.

Nice start Phil. The older Hasegawa F-14s have raised detail. Usually the paint work is weathered via pre-shading, and after paint application, washes. They are after all gull-grey with possibly a US Navy White underside depending on the year. I've never built one, but did some research when considering one a while ago. You're off to a good start, will watch your Tomcat come to life

Hey Aaron, Steve mentioned your colours for the A-5 were RLM74/75 over 76. No green! And as for raised panel lines, having spent a good deal of time around aeroplanes, I can assure you not all panels are flush. I suspect that you would not offend any aircraft builders here, having seen what you can do with armour, if you apply those skills to an aeroplane it will come out an awesome piece of work.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fill / hide fuselage joins on a kit with raised detail? I am dry fitting this one and there is a noticeable join. If I fill and sand I will loose the surrounding panel detail.

Looks good so far Phil, the crew will make an interesting scene.That is actually a real difficult place to have a seam, half way down the fuselage in full sight. I have a few possible solutions.

1. Mask either side of the seam to protect as much of the detail as you can. Fill/sand as desired. Any lost raised detail can be replaced using stretched sprue, or even hair (or any other suitably sized product).

2. Consider using extra thin cement, such as Tamiya's product. Stick the fuselage together. Once dry, use very small amounts of normal model glue or even White Out (is that what you guys call correction fluid?) to carefully full the seam. A light sand once dry with a high grit paper will blend it nicely.

Yes thanks joe. good idea. I like the mask idea to protect as much as poss. Will possibly try and combine both.

Airframe fitted together but has needed lots of filling. Coming on ok though ...

Looks good so far Phil (though a bit more filling/sanding than I'd expect from a Hasegawa kit).

You can reinstate raised panel lines by re-scribing lightly with a craft knife. The knife will plough a slightly raised furrow both sides of the line, which under a coat of paint should be virtually indiscernible from the kit's raised lines. It should help that there are quite a few markings below the canopy which will further help to disguise it

The kit is an old Revell kit that I've had in the cupboard for years. It's been a bit of a nightmare so far. The fit is not that good but I'm getting there.

I will do the Hasegawa at some point after I complete this one.
