Well this turned out a lot better than I was expecting. As I said before, I only bought these for painting practice, and I certainly never intended to make a diorama out of them.
But I actually enjoyed the painting process(after the first one).
Still lots of room for improvement, but I've learned a few more lessons and I'm fired up to start on the Germans!
The question is- before or after the 'Flying Scotsman' ?

Here is a small post-script to this piece.
My lockdown 'exercise regime' has consisted entirely of walking in the local woods, and it was this that inspired me to use the bracken as a setting for the boys. As August turned into September I noticed the bracken was getting a bit brown around the edges, and as September 1914 is the date of this model I thought I ought to do something about it, so I added some brown to the edges of the green ferns.
Also, I had always wanted to show the Grenadier Guards shoulder titles but I didn’t dare attempt to paint them.
There are some Archer decals out there but they are VERY expensive. I explored making my own decals but I couldn’t get the artwork small enough with any decent resolution.

THEN I remembered that in the Airfix Multipose British Infantry set there are decals- and I have them in with the 17 Pounder Field Gun in my stash. Result!
But no…… they are BLUE Royal Artillery and Canada titles!
I googled and found that in the Infantry set there are indeed Grenadier Guards shoulder titles, among others, so, ‘in for a penny, in for a pound’ I emailed Airfix and asked if they were available to buy.
To my surprise I got a very prompt reply, and apparently from a real person, to say that things were very delayed because of Covid 19, so after a while I kind of forgot about it.
Anyway, about a month ago these arrived –

Good old Airfix! And for free- Hurrah!

On closer inspection, I found that even Airfix had trouble with the resolution


But you don’t look a gift horse in the mouth so I broke the Tommies out of their little perspex box again and slapped the decals on their shoulders.

Great stuff Neil I think the bracken was that good I never even gave it a second glance untill you mentioned it ,even better now ,I think not giving it a second glance shows just how good it is I mentally perceived as bracken hope you understand what I'm trying to say once again great stuff.
