discussion Richy C - 1st dio update

Hi Guys , 1st off like to thank all who advised getting stuff from the garden , Finally got 3-4 hrs in today after a long break (either looking after the kids , other stuff to do , and not being in the mood), not far off with the dio , the most realistic tree/twigs I could find are bare but have ordered some 1/35 laser cut paper brown oak leaves to scatter around giving the autumn look (i hope) , I will also add a mix of real mud and scenic glue to the base (when I find some through all the snow we have got), I`m also not happy with inside window reveals so the walls are going to be a neutral colour and the inside windowsill will be dark red with lines giving a tile effect (I hope) , I might also add some clear plastic to the windows , and a bucket and spade (not the seaside stuff) just inside the side gate.

Looks really good Richy, that Miniart house turned out very well (and I know what a pig they can be!) I'm with John though, it would be better with a little smoke damage or soot stains maybe? Patrick

Right then just done the window reveals and it looks a lot better,

John with all repsect mate not all buildings got demolished in WW2 , if I wanted the bombed look that is the kit I would have bought , but being a new boy thought it would be better doing a dio with a building intact , and in time move on to the more complicated stuff (ie- bombed up buildings) when I`ve got more experence, , and I mean that in a nice way mate,

Although my build is far from good I`m enjoying every minute I`m working on it and learning all the time.

Richy, I think you're wise to stay away from damaged buildings for this diorama simply because the figures will be the centre piece, not the buildings. I think damaging the building will distract from the subject matter....the prisoners and the paras.

As you rightly pointed out, not every building was damaged in WW2, infact whole villages were sometimes by-passed. Even cities, Paris for instance was declared 'Open' as was Rome. Both escaped with minor damage as a result.

But as is always the case, different modellers have different ideas and interpretations....and long may it stay so!

Hi Patrick , I can`t see where the smoke damage and soot stains could work with an un-damaged building I`m open to offers mate but the idea of my 1st build was to make it as un-complicated as possible while learning to make models & figures and then paint them , I`m happy with my progress at the moment mate and maybe the soot and smoke damage will be added to my next dio , what I don`t want to do is rush things and try and run before I can walk, what I`ve got to do is remember that the only real modelling I`ve done before is 20 odd years ago and that was making 1/20 scale F1 cars,

But I must say I`m loving modelling ww2 stuff now and learning everyday

PS Looking at a building that's NOT blown up, shot to pieces or burnt down is also pretty nice for a change!

I am with you on this one Richy. As you rightly say, not all buildings were damaged. In fact the majority of buildings in villages away from major conflict were untouched, just as not every building in Britain got damaged. The figures, being Paras, would lead me to think that this was well well behind German lines and it would be right not to be damaged. What happened when the Allied advance moved up in force, who knows.

That tree looks good and the building looks superb. This is going to be a good one bud.

I love the tree and how it aesthetically leans towards the house.

Try adding some weathering to the house were it joins the cobbles (rising damp, moss etc) and rain stain to the ends of the window lintels/sills by allowing a wash to run down the walls.

Richy, does the box of Tamiya drums & jerrycans mean that there will be the scale-models signature bucket appearing in the dio?:grinball2:

Yes a bucket will will be present Patrick , just inside the gate ( its even going to have a bit of vallejo still water in it ) - I take it that its an un-written scale-models rule that a bucket should be added to all dios , if so count me in mate. the Tamiya fuel/oil drum kit contains - yes you got it Fuel/oil drums , jerry cans and 4 buckets , so thats me sorted for a while with buckets.

Nice touch , will that mean I`m in the bucket gang now ?

Thanks for the nice comments Chris , (sorry I missed your post) , unfortunately my dio has come to a halt , I`m waiting for some bits to be delivered and with the weather we have got could be anytime, I can see the finnish line now and will keep everyone updated when I can get going again ,

I can`t even finnish my bucket Mr Chairman as I`m (again) still waiting for stuff including still water.
