discussion rifle paint colors

hi everyone, I have been trying to find a paint that dose look like a rifle wood,

I seam to be going to dark brown or too lite, with them just cannot find the right color to

mix and match with and was wounding what ,others use for theirs,

paint and number ,

any help most welcome

Hi moni go for a red/brown, humbrol colour 160 or revell aqua colour 37 those are what I use

Monica there not that far away from the colour I use and they look good so I wouldn't worry

wood is a bit like the leather as well, a bit off hard one to get right,

just had a look at the two ,paints very close as you say,thank you,

just need a good base to work off,

1st humbrol, red/brown 160 2rd revell 37 reddish/brown

Yeah moni you can't tell the difference on a build, humbrol calls it german camo red and revell call it redish brown but they are the same colour

hi John, you could almost use the humbrol, dark rust as well is very close looking at it,

well thats noticed on my shopping list as well, ta,

Monica I find burnt umber over white primer works well my screaming eagle will be finished very soon and you can judge for yourself as I'm not an expert in these matters but I'm pleased how his rifle turned out good look with your rifles regards John

Moni there are a number of types of wood which are used as rifle butts. Also the butts change colour depending on their use for instance if they are subjected to light or kept in a cupd.

One thing that does make reality is the graining and the graining is a slightly different hue to the main stock. On any wood flooring partitions in an aircraft etc.

I use a hardish bristled brush. Dip in the paint to be used to get the grain look. The brush it out until there is virtually little paint left. Then scrape the brush down the stock and a few whispy lines will be left. Best to test and experiment before the real thing. Make sure the base coat is well cured you can then recover by removing the first offerings.

Also add that on larger areas I paint on haphazardly not covering every bit then another coat of another similar colour again haphazardly. Produces some really effective finishes. Goes with out saying pull the brush in the same direction every time but not dead straight.

My way is Tamiya desert yellow & then burnt sienna oil paint over that, gently run a flat brush over it to leave the wood grain effect.

I can't find a decent rifle pic, but then same effect was used on my fence

Hi Moni,

I think the most realistic way to let plastic look like wood is a light brown/sand coloured base and then you put some brownish oils on it but very gentle, to make a decent wood grain. It works for me.

and if i cannot find one that works well say no more, thanks again all, do like the looks off that fence Patrick,

but all ways should end up with some what the simulate result

Vallejo Model color Mahogany brown . Mix a little pale yellow to the first coat. Once that is dry, paint the second coat and while still wet, run a stiff dry brush along its length. The hand grip, the outer most side of the but will be more worn that the rest so a tight dry brush with a paler tone will show nice there.

Remember also that Rifles where very well looked after.

hi Derek ,Ian,thank you both for your help , Im starting to get quite a few Vallijo ,colors try to get some ever other week or so, I find them

alot smother paint to use, with all the info i have gotten I should be right and try a few difference ways and ,just do a little touch up work,

on the ones i have already done,
