Very sad news.

Even in relative peacetime these guys and girls have a demanding role that most in civvie street take for granted.

RIP

Sadly so true Geoff. Although in the UK most military flights end in 'ex' for exercise. The flying part is not an exercise, it's real. If a component goes wrong or the pilots make a poor judgement even the weather can play a major role. Mr Gravity is very unforgiving. In a car and your engine fails you stop or pull over. in a ship, if your engines fail - you stop but you're still afloat. Sadly - if an engine in a flying machine stops - gravity kicks in and you're going down.
Aircraft safety is way better than it was 20-40 years ago where this type of event was frequent. But sadly it does happen. Those involved know the risks but just accept it as part of what they do be it training or operations.

A very tragic accident. Condolences to the family and friends of the dead crew member.
