discussion Snow effect

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place.

I'm going to do a snow Dio with my Tamiya 88m flak 36, but I'm a little stuck on how to get a snow effect to place on the ground as if it's just fallen. I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm quite new to the whole thing and could really do with some guidance.

Cover the area with PVA glue that you want the snow to be in then using a sieve shake baking soda/chalk/pastel over the wet glue. You can even mix the 'snow' into the PVA glue to bulk it out a little

If you want to put snow on the vehicle/aircraft. get a little white pigment on the end of a flat brush and then whilst over the model tap the handle causing the pigment to fall and land like snow flakes. Make sure that the area's you want the snow effect to lay on, have a matt varnish or something similar for the pigment to stick to. Hope this helps

My method is slightly different to the above excellent methods. I don't buy pigments, I use bog standard white emulsion paint and use this to cover the whole of the dio.

Finally, I get a fine sieve and put some ordinary white Polyfilla powder in it. Hold it over the model / diorama, and gently tap the sieve...It's snowing, and a darn sight cheaper than pigments! lol

If you want a bit of a sparkle repeat with baking soda.

Thanks chaps that's a real help, just normal poly filler from B&Q etc?? I've got some White mig stuff and some pro modeller stuff but you don't get a lot and I'm sure it would cost a bomb to use that. Any more tips???

Yep bog standard poly filler is just the job

I've used bog standard polyfilla in the past to good effect. You can use the ready mix to form the base and then sprinkle the powdered variety over it or go the whole cheap path and mix some powder up into a paste before sprinkling it over it.

I'm sure flour would work OK as well.

I wouldnt use flour, i once read someone did this and it looked fine ,for a couple of days ,then started to get a mould growing over it!!! Polyfilla sounds good to me. cheers tony
