I thought these may be of interest in showing the effects weather has on specific areas of the Phantom..

Interesting photos Danny.The one I intend doing has some weathering on it.So I'm going to have to have a go I suppose.I once tried the peeling paint effect on a Zero.I used masking fluid.It worked but didn't look realistic.I will have to try salt.Are you going to give it a go?.

Interesting photos.

A good way to get the worn off effect is..... to rub it off. Literally. Spray the top coat on and wipe it while its still wet. You can make a right pigs out of it, but it can also look rather good. The paint just needs to be WET and not half dried.

I have done it a few times on armour with good effect but never tried it on an aircraft...

Those are USAF F-4s and appear to be rather war weary. The US Navy ones I have studied appear to have been maintained to a much better standard. I suppose being at sea the paint has to be maintained and the aircraft washed regularly. The common weathering I have seen is a lot of soot and burnt metal around the tail area.
