On the home page there is a record of numbers of threads, messages - the relevant one is the numbers of members, - it is creeping up - it's standing at 6,988 at the moment, and I'm wondering if that has increased the numbers of active members, or actual supporters? Anyone noticed any difference?
As a purely personal petty prejudice, I've decided I'm not going to post responses to new members that don't have the courtesy to introduce themselves. Just one of those small things that really annoy me!!

Nothing like making people want to join and feel welcomed eh?

If I go into a pub, I don't feel the need to shout out my name or anything else about myself.

OK Pete point taken but i feel its nice to know a little bit about the person you are talking to an where in the world they hail from but that for me anyway is in an introduction

Agree totally Dave....
That's been my mantra for a while now.... I also don't respond to regular members who don't bother to acknowledge comments on their threads... There's not a lot of them, but enough to annoy me!!! ;)
But generally,I think he.... I mean "they" ;) only post up to brag !!

HA,Yeah,I get that Pete...
HOWEVER, when you go into a Pub you're anonymous I suspect.... You're not in there to ask people what they think of the pints,or brands of spirit,beer... Etc??? ...
If you did though, and then someone gave you some suggestions... Would you not reply to them?!! ;) ....
I suspect you would Sir :)....
....it's just common courtesy :)
Just my thoughts obviously,
Andy.

Andy I agree with this there’s only a few here that does this why even bother to look at what there posting anymore I just fly on by there post after years of comments and likes I gave they still ignore members not just me.

Dave has a great point why join a forum if you can’t introduce yourself. I have to admit though it’s scary. The very first forum I ever joined many years ago was a Millitary forum I always heard and read about how strict most Millitary Builders are but I got the courage and joined and introduced myself and what I liked to build and done I got a overwhelming response and I was welcomed in the fold. Maybe some just have a fear of introducing there selves. A thought to take in consideration maybe

Have you guys ever thought that perhaps some people that post on here as new members may be posting on their first forum, or may be nervous about the whole social media thing? Why hang them for an offence they may not even know they’ve committed? All you do is demean them and diminish yourself.
I do agree with Andy about those established members that unfailingly do not reply to comments on their threads though. What’s the point of being on a forum if you don’t interact with the other members???

Great statement Tim! I think we sometimes look at new members the wrong way till we get to know them. But if there all over social media I feel a nice introduction on there first post here would be nice and a ice breaker for us and them.

This was the first forum I ever joined - I was somewhat nervous in posting an initial message - however, the abuse I received then (and subsequently) made it all worthwhile!

Thanks all for the comments - nice to see both sides of the argument, although I still think introducing yourself is common courtesy. Afraid to post? - well, it's not as if you are meeting face to face, or addressing a public meeting - you don't have to use your real name, or post a photo, or reveal any info you don't want to - you can remain anonymous, so what's the fear? If I'd been afraid of making a fool of myself every time I opened my mouth ( potentially ), I'd have become a Trappist Monk! :tongue-out3:
Dave

Mmmmmm I can see both sides of this ,but if I'm honest I only really watch what the SMF supporters are up to ,interesting also that the usual suspects are the only ones(allSMF supporters)joining in on the topic . When John opened up the site to all I was p'd off by the number of what I'd class as semi pro's that appeared giving it the big look at mine I refrained from even commenting, thankfully they seem to have realised that no one cared and have moved on along with a couple of this is my first build what do you think of that well if that's your first im giving up. From what I understand there will always be ex amount that never join in in anyway but are happy to look on .
Personaly I think were still all in the best place . Dave
