So I have just learnt something today. The later Mk Spitfires had propellers made from wood. So before you go diving in with some weathered metal chipping on the blades its probably worth checking first to see what material your Spits blades were made from.

A bit of follow up reading explains that the leading edges were often protected by brass sheaths which were doped over and painted. This makes sense if the purpose of the wooden blade is to break away without causing major engine damage, you want to use a malleable metal sheath. You also need erosion protection.

I also learned that the name Rotol is a play on the names of the two original owners, ROlls Royce and BrisTOL.
