Mitsubishi G4M1 ' Betty ' in 1/72
Two 1/72 Japanese bombers - this & the ICM Ki-21 ' Sally ' being released within a few months!- it's pretty ironic that both aircraft were designed for pretty much the same missions, but the G4M1 was exclusively used by the IJN & the Ki-21 by the army - and both were built by Mitsubishi !

I don’t think there has ever been inter-service rivalry as bad as in Japan in the 1930s–40s. For even more confusing examples, try the Type 97 machine gun. No, the other one that’s very similar to the (fixed) Type 89. Or, of course, pretty much the whole reason why the Japanese switched their war effort from China and Russia to the Pacific Ocean.

And of course, why the Japanese Army had submarines and aircraft carriers ( OK, they were more like airplane transports )....................

The inter service rivalry between the RAF and the Navy caused some issues in the UK between the wars……The RAF were in charge of aircraft procurement, so only ever prioritised what they wanted. The Navy therefore got what it was given, not what it wanted or needed. The RAF didn’t believe in the dive bomber doctrine, so naval carriers originally ended up with the Blackburn Skua dive bomber, supplied with no dive bombsight. No modern fighter was originally designed for them to use shipboard as well, so the Skua had to do both jobs…..and then some damn fool fitted it with a turret, creating the Roc and completely compromising its performance. I suppose they were lucky the RAF didn’t try to make it carry torpedos as well……

Funny how languages sometimes have very peculiar contacts: in the local language, spoken in the region where I live (don't call it a dialect or you'll be harshly rebuked by locals, SWMBO included :rolling:) , "roc" means "stubborn fathead"... :smiling5:

There is some blurb about the real thing on the modeling news web page a few body changes and bullet proof glas in the forward vision slit, ,I know big deal but the skull and cross bones are neat only problem for me is why these manufacturers continue with these full interior kits when most of it won't be seen id rather one without all that for half the price still thats just miserly me.

I would really prefer it if manufacturers were to just release one kit with alternative parts for multiple versions, especially when the differences between kits are things like whether or not it has smoke launchers, an AA machine gun, some extra hooks on the turret, and similar. Okay, a different set of tracks, sure — you don’t really need two complete sets of individual-link tracks in a kit (though that doesn’t stop some manufacturers), but a lot of these other changes between kits seem to be just as doable by adding a few parts to existing sprues and an extra drawing in the instruction sheet.

Whole heartedly agree its not just the armour kits that suffer from this wingy things are just as bad 109's 190's A-Z same with spits and hurricanes MK1-Mk100 before you all start ok the latter MKs were a bit diffrent but thoes with the same body ,chassis, air frame can surely all go in the same box ,not done one for a good few years but dragon kits used to be big box loads of sprues but most of them blocked out in blue in the instructions a couple more parts and one box would have done all ,ok I know some guys like to build the whole A-Z but would they care if every one meant buying the same box each time every time?

I personally want to build all the Fw190A's and D's. But in 1/32 scale there isn't that option without buying expensive AM. 109's were quite different too. So i wouldn't lump everything all together.

Besides. No-one is making you buy all these StuGs right?

Well, no, but for the Fw 190, for example, a manufacturer could get a long way with two basic kits (long and short noses) with various parts to take care of the details for the different versions, I think? Same for the Bf 109: work out where major changes occurred and use that as a breakpoint between “we can add a few optional parts before releasing this kit” and “we need to replace entire sprues so let’s make it a new kit”.

Nope. They'd have to make fuselage inserts and other structural changes, different wings.

Anyway. Thread drift. My bad for doing it too
