Hmmm - 'Ben Hur'? The film with the famous chariot race didn't come out until 1959. OK, the book was 1880 ( by Civil War General Lew Wallace! ), but I reckon the name is a modern add

The nickname comes from the original manufacturer, Ben-Hur Mfg. Co. from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Not sure if it was used during the war already, but it’s not inconceivable.

It doesn’t appear to be used in the technical manual — not too surprisingly — to which I might add that only the US Army would publish an 89-page manual for a trailer

From Monday 8th Jan, at various times on PBS America ' The Lafayette Escadrille ' 2-part documentary on US pilots flying for France in WWI
