Captain's build log - Earthdate 12082024.

After lengthy discussions with Scotty we have decided to completely build a new starship from scratch and here begins the voyage......

First the usual photos

1000014369.jpg1000014250.jpg1000014249.jpg1000014248.jpg1000014247.jpg1000014246.jpg1000014251.jpg

I have got the startreklighting.co.uk kit with (hopefully) full saucer and hull lighting, flashing navigation lights in green, red and clear, shuttle bay entrance strobe lights and "rotating" Boussard collector lights. On order from Green Strawberry in the Czech Republic a PE sheet with details parts including a bridge and shuttle bay.

This will be a trip into the unknown for me as I have never soldered anything to a circuit board before, never used spray cans on a model before (primer and black followed by white for light blocking the interior) and not built any significant PE before.

Mocked up the main body to assess size etc. Soldered up the components for the 2 circuit boards - they seem alright to me but comments etc. more than welcome. Just realised that the power supply I have may not be suitable as it outputs 12V 1.5A and the instructions say I need an output of 12V 2A - can I use the lower rampage one to test Mt connections etc.

More questions sure to be asked in the coming weeks and months. 1000014254.jpg1000014253.jpg1000014245.jpg

I loved the original StarTrek. It seems very dated compared to more modern stuff but as a youngster, back in the 60s, it was a "must see". I'll enjoy seeing this built. Should be impressive with the PE and lighting.

I always love to see something out of the ordinary.

Settling in to my seat with a mug of Yorkshire tea and some hob nobs.

I can raid the wife's Yorkshire GOLD tea bags but I am a coffee guy. Haven't got plain hob nobs but the chocolate variety is slowly oozing out of the cupboard in our 32 degree heat. Garibaldis are just fine.

Quick update.
Not too much progress due to a self expanding SWMBO list magically appearing!
PE arrived and is very delicate but nicely detailed with good instructions. All holes drilled out for lights, wiring etc. First piece of PE attached to slightly modified impulse engine.

Started on first nacelle by making up one grille, cutting away the kit grille. I will glue a piece of translucent plastic inside the nacelle to diffuse the blue light and eradicate 'hot spots'. Was considering using tracing paper to soften the lights in all the hull windows but was afraid it might discolour or detatch over time so will experiment with sanding the the rears of the transparent parts to soften the lighting effect.

More to follow as it (slowly) progresses.
Any comments, ideas gladly welcomed, thanks for following the build.

Stefan

Looks a great kit Stefan with some nice detail. And the electronics and photo etch just seal the deal.
One to beam aboard!

Cheers

Short update but took 4 hours concerted graft.
1 nacelle both PE grilles built (fiddly) and kit grilles removed.
No light blocking done and colour is much more blue than photos show.
Photo 1.
No light diffusion present.
Photo 2. 1 piece of translucent milk carton fitted.
Photo 3. 2 pieces of translucent milk carton fitted.
Photo 4. As Photo 3 with PE grilles dry fitted.
Photo 5. As Photo 4 with kit warp doohickey dry fitted.

Photo 5 is the effect I wanted.
Any thoughts or comments welcome.

Chris I am not an expert on these machines, I just like them and the original series. The fact that so many kit manufacturers and after market electrical component makers offer lit nacelles I will go with it. I believe this kit with its engraved grid lines is apparently based on the episode "Trials and Tribbleations".

an i read up on the guy who painted the really big model that parmount used for close up's in the movie vershion as he was sayin he used very exspensive flip flop paints to make it look like a metal of the future an he got angry when they filmed it as they used high powered lights an the lights desroyed the flipflop colours he spent hundreds of hrs painting the hull an about the tv seris enterprise ive seen no end of arguments about the true colour of the enterprise as on tv it looks pearlesence white but then other say it was painted a very light grey so no one could agree on that but i sprayed my enterprise in tamayia pearesence white an when the sun shine on it it dose show differnt colour like pearl but again them tamyia paints were exspensive
chrisb

The colour is a can of worms, yet to make my decision but definitely not filling in the grid lines.
GOOD for you Stefee as it a lot of work an to me its makes the ship look more real with the panel lines as i thought it looked horrendous all smooth an have you not seen these utube vids ? or are you not insterted ?
