Hi all , bit of a stranger round these parts ( armour / vehicles ) but here we go . The Tamiya SAS jeep will be nothing new to loads of you , being in production forever but its something I always liked the look of so decided to jump in feet first . When I had a good look at the sprues I was surprised the figures were a bit poor ( especially as this is a very early boxing so the moulds should have still been sharp )
Apart from the soft details they look like identical twins , so I got some resin replacements which are a lot better and come with four different heads to give a bit of choice. I started with the chassis and body and gave most of the sprues a quick prime too .

After reading up a bit on these I found out they were delivered from the factory in standard olive drab and were hand painted in the sand colour by the soldiers , so thats what im going to do too. Most of the parts have had a coat of olive drab and I think I'm going to brush paint the sand .

After giving the body a coat of olive drab I then gave it a mist of hairspray . The hope is that once its been painted in the sand colour I can scrub away a little to reveal the olive drab underneath to simulate wear and tear. The sand colour has now been roughly brushed on ( as it was in the desert ) and I have started to rub it off in areas where it would have naturally worn .
I have painted the wheels and again rubbed off some of the sand colour .

Cheers steve , thing is I’m going to give it a lovely chipped paint job then cover it up with all the jerry cans , tarps , bags etc , you wont see much of it !

I'm in Tony, like the brush painting part over the olive drab, neat idea.

All chipped and worn now and the underside and wheel arches/ wheels have had a wash with light dirt .I had a sand wash but I tried it and it was way too yellow , the light dirt gives it a nice dusty look . Next up is fastening all the crap on - but a fair bit of scratching is needed here, it even says so in the instructions . The jerry cans all need frames or straps making and the water canteens and kitbags all need straps .

Started with the jerry cans on the bonnet and front wings , using some aluminium strip from the spares box . This was cut into varying widths and used to make a frame . The jerry cans in the back are held in with a frame which was again made from strips of aluminium superglued together with hinges and latches added with bits of copper wire .
The kit leaves it up to the builder which stuff to add and where so I decided to have a camo net on the front of the bonnet . The kit offering was a bit naff so I raided the missus’ sewing box and got some bias binding . Once rolled up and some straps added with the aluminium again it looks a lot better than the kit one .
I was also looking at the spare wheels and realised they havent got any bolt holes in them so they were drilled and bolts simulated in three of the holes .

Good progress. I have this kit in my stash and it spurring me on to do mine, but I'll wait see how many tips I can pick up from you, Lol. Looks good so far, not sure I'm up to the standards of the mods that you are applying though. But I'm learning stuff....
