discussion Tamiya Spray Paint Alternatives

Hi folks,

I currently do not own an airbrush, so i'm using a lot of tamiya spray paint, the negative is that it's really expensive, but on the other hand it has wide range of colors for modelling. Is there any alternative brands?? Thanks

Hi Leo,

the only other one I know of is Testors. But it stays expensive. A cheap alternative would be a single action airbrush for about 10 bucks and a bottle of 800ml air, it will comes cheaper I think.

I was thinking the very same thing about aweek ago, and post for help with compressor ?

as i was looking at it the way you are ,by the time you buy 10 spray cans , you can have one if you wont ,

or try to way Richi said ,

as they all gave me very good advice in what to look for as well

the unite i was looking at was for $100 aud and i looked today and had jumped up by $200 in 1 day, so after

hrs off ebay searching i found one that was the same but $20 more so i got it, before that go,s up as well

but looking forward to using , it when i get it, maybe just start with under coats, and top coats and still brush in

the wreathing and other bits,

i wouldnt bother with canned air.....doesnt last long, always seems to run out just when you need it

i know Badger do an adapter that converts a car tyre/inner tube to airbrush hose which can be useful and very cheap to refill

just make sure you have a moisture trap

what colours do you want?....are you doing cars/bikes?.......just buy automotive paint in rattle cans, then the range you have is huge

Good advice from Monica. The cost of buying an airbrush and compressor are quickly earned back on the saving on paint.

Aircans are a pain. The car tyre adapter is OK if you have a tyre and a garage that you can get it pumped in.

Moni. The reason that the compressor doubled in prise was probably due to it being Christmas. Greedy buggers.

Thanks for the reply guys, i was looking at the basic tamiya airbrush set, the really basic one, but after doing some research it doesnt come with any power supply (adaptor/battery). And it's not really easy to buy the adaptor/battery pack from where i'm from.

Leo both Vallejo and Humbrol market spray in a can paints. But only limited colours.

As all have said above you are better with even a cheap to start with compressor and brush. Cans are about £6. Humbrol Revell Vallejo are all below £2 per bottle and I bet they go much further than a can. No adjustment on a can you get the paint or you do not. With a two stage airbrush you can get so much flexibility with both the amount of paint you are spraying out plus being able to spray large areas and in close to spray fine lines. Also you have the ability to adjust the pressure you spray at. You will also find that you can get into neat corners to spray. A good brush with just a reliable but cheap compressor you will find just a revelation & transform all that you do.

Mine is a non-tank type compressor, just a small jobbie-reason is two fold, one I wanted to get used to AB and second was space. It is okay as a no-flash starter kit but is worth investing in a tank compressor if you can.

As has been mentioned car paint and good quality plastic primer can give you superb results and can be had cheap.

Happy new year from Indonesia, guess what i got for the new year, a simple AB from the wife, a happy man indeed facing the new year. That was a surprise!! Now do i need enamel or acrylics paints for the AB. I have lots of Tamiya Enamel Paints. Can i use them? Any input? Thanks

Leo you are OK with those types of paint.

But some brushes do not have the seals which are resistant to solvents and will deteriorate and need replcacing. Harder and Steenbeck & OIwata as an intance have seals which are resistant to at least all the ones used on model making paints. Once the seals begin to go you will get air leakage which will affect the out put.

Si you can get a tank at any time to add on. All that you do is to fit the tank where the brush is and add an extra hose from tank to airbrush. You can get 6 & 9 litre which means the compressor is silent for a long time and also the pressure is more even.
