I have some white primer around and I'm about to start a build on a model that is white styrene. It's really difficult to determine coverage when airbrushing white on white. Is it possible to add a drop of paint to the primer to tint it? Or am I asking for trouble here?

White is a shocking mould colour to work with at the best of times. My (yet to be finished) Phantom was moulded in white. I primed it in light grey and the white underside sprayed on no problems at all after two coats. It may be difficult to see where you have been when using white on white, someone else may have some advice regarding tinting the primer.

Traditionally painters would tint each coat they applied in order to see they covered as they should.

Not sure which paint manufacturer you are using Andrew. I know that you can mix any of the Vallejo products with another of their products. I suspect if both products are from the same fold then all should be well.

Just try on a piece of scrap that will tell you very quickly. With acrylics care should be taken as I "think" some manufacturers use different thinner bases for each other.

As Laurie said as long as you mix from the same brand. Vallejo with Vallejo, Humbrol with Humbrol etc. you will be fine. Just avoid the use of gloss paint as a tint...

Yeah the part I was concerned with was also mixing brands which I know is generally a no-no. I have Model Master primer and all Tamiya paints. I think I'll save that primer for another project. I've had trouble with it lifting off the plastic even after washing parts as well. I was suspecting because I was priming white on white and not getting good enough coverage. The last couple of builds I used Tamiya rattle-can primer and got great results. I just have no luck with Model Master for some reason!

Andrew I not only wash the parts but also wet & dry with a 1200 paper to give a key for the primer base.
