The answer to that one is unknown. Having two insane cats it would have to be toughened glass and due to the size it would be rather heavy. Plexiglass is the only practical way out.

Its had a coat of clear white lacquer now and it will be getting a sand down and another coat in the next few days.

I have also started to drill the holes for the adjustable shelves.

Suppose it would be rather heavy, plexiglass is definitely more practical.

A coat of matt varnish and its on to drilling more holes.

I might of gone a bit over the top with the first one's used up the whole lot! Out and buy some more.

So the bottom unit got a few less holes.

And yes one or two of them are a bit off line. I must of hit a knot in the wood so the drill went walkies.

Drum roll! I still don't have enough! They sell them in packets of 20 pegs and 20 'housings' Why cant they sell them separate?

Hate being a pessimist Ian but look at a panel of plexi before deciding as what I have seen working in architecture it can be quite distorting.

From my point of view I want to be in touch with the models & show them on shelves. Putting them behind doors some how locks them away.

Every couple of weeks I take a large fantail brush & dust the models. Fortunately my younger son's cat, we have just been fostered too, is not interested in static models in the conservatory she prefers the flapping wing types with loads of feathers !

O dear Ian this is cat a sropic. Perhaps nice smelling food in the model room calming influence. Whoops the cat has just jumped on my lap & tested my cardiac system.

Put an electric fence around the cupboard perhaps? Might be cheaper than plexi and keep the cats off?

Or maybe grow a catnip plant in a large pot at the opposite side of the room so they're more interested in that?

Well things have been a bit slow on this partly due to a couple of "family things"; birthdays and a confirmation. Add to that that the last week the sun has been banging it out at 27 C out side. That puts the temp in the loft in the way to hot to work side of things. So I made some blinds instead. Nice and cool up there now!

Any how I have been slowly making some doors for the large high part. Went for Oak as it fits in well with the rest of the wood work up there.

The smaller sections will either get one big door each, or if I can be naffed pairs of doors to match the high one.... Not sure yet.

Looking very neat Ian, personally I think the smaller sections would look better with just one door, with the hinges on the left hand side. Also that way the doors would be roughly the same size as the doors on the larger sections, keeping it nice and equal.

Just to let you know that I have not forgotten about this, just had other things to do....I did buy some wood to do the rest of the doors with yesterday but don't feel up to much. Man cold you know!

Well I can see that it has been three months (!) since I last posted in this thread.

So, Whats happened. The Man cold went and the fishing rods came out. So that kind of put the project on hold.. Also I was manning my self up to pay for all that sodding plexi glass!

Not an easy pill to swallow but having gotten this far and having made the doors in a very light construction, real glass would of been to heavy.

Any how, the worst part of £180 (yes one hundred and eighty pounds) worse off I finally got the doors sorted.

I have spent today making shelves. The two bottom small compartments have solid pine shelves with an Oak edging on the front, the upper one of the small compartments, has 3mm plexi glass with an oak edge at the front and back to stiffen it up- The Highest unit, with the double doors has yet to get shelves but they will be clear plexi glass and oak edging.

The wooden shelves just need a quick sand down and some white varnish on the pine part.

So its pretty much down. At last I can start to build again... Well not that I ever stopped, just sort of slowed down to a crawl.

Well All I need is a few shelves for the wide unit, but the smaller sections are done and filling up way to fast!!!

SWMBO even says it looks good. She didn't look to happy when I said that the second one will be easier, as I know how to do it now...then ran. Well walked fast!
