I've cleaned up the parts ready for painting. Here it is Blu-tacked together:

This is a thing of real beauty - the detailing is exquisite. Not too much clean up was required, apart from the removal of the casting blocks and some trimming around the edges of the torso. The helmet had a couple of bubbles that needed filling, but I was glad to find that it fitted perfectly and won't need attaching to the head until after painting - these are heavy components and keeping the weight down as I work is a good idea. The sword was very bent, so I've straightened it out over steam and left it under a heavy block.

Hi Peter
Huge and beautifully cast. A perfect canvas for your skills.

Looks very detailed indeed, that chain-mail must have been a pain to sculpt. Looking forward to your magic paintwork :thumb2: ...

Thanks for looking in people. I'll give it my best shot.

Morning Peter

Looks like a solid new project for your painting skills to enjoy.

Its probably going to be too quick for you, but it should last the weekend, or until your house it a little quieter.

Enough said

John - Comfy chair reserved.

Steve - There's quite a lot to it, so it should take a few days. The perisher is here for another week, so the house will remain noisy.

Hi Mick

This is turning into a b****r!! I've just had to take a scalpel to one of the eyes, but it should be OK.

Peter,
reading that, I thought you meant the perisher!!! On sober consideration, I realise it was the Viking, that got the knife!

Dave - Heaven forbid! She gets away with murder though. She took one of the fake coals out of the gas fire and drew all over the coffee table with it. We only noticed because she'd eaten some and had a black mouth.

Hi Richard. About twice the size of the Coppergate. A real whopper.

This nearly didn't get this far - a real pig:

The eyes were nasty, nasty, nasty. As mentioned, I had to take a scalpel to the left eye to try and sort out some of the creases as what was there was unpaintable. It's far from perfect, but a bit more tweaking should see it avoid the bin.

Thanks Ralph. It's been an almighty struggle with the head.

Did some more work on the face, then on to the helmet:

There really is nowhere to hide at this scale - every lump and bump shows. Things were not helped by the helmet flying off and hitting the floor. The main casualty was the nose-guard which shattered into three pieces. I had to shorten it to cut off the damage, but I think it looks OK.

To paint, I first gave the helmet a coat of flat black, then a layer of matt varnish to protect it. I next dry-brushed on Vallejo Oily Steel followed by Natural Steel, building up the highlights with layers of Oily Steel. Then I consolidated the lines and rivets with thinned black, and finally dotted in the rivets with Old Gold highlighted with Pure Gold. Still a bit of burnishing to do.

Morning Peter

Looks like this one has been fighting you all the way?

You do seem to be winning and your metalwork as ever is superb.

Your description seems so simple in relation to the finish you've achieved, hopefully the remainder should be more willing to cooperate?

Lots of metalwork too.

Will you stick with the red vest or pick another colour?

Should be a better day with no frost unlike the weekend.

My back has been out in sympathy with my knee!

Can't walk or sit comfortably!

Can't drive either, to get to my chiropractor either, time for more tablets!

Have a good day with the paints and family too

Regards
