White spirit and turps substitute are the same. The odourless thinners from art shops is a bit less aggressive.

I’ll second that. I use an art shop version as I found Wickes (other DIY outlets available) own brand eating into my varnish layer a few times!

I third that. I started out using bog standard turps/white spirit from DIY stores and it ate into the acrylic work in places even with a layer of varnish on top. I have used a couple of art shop thinners now which are a lot better. In fact I now use one which smells of oranges and I have no issues with odour from the thinners any more.

Resurrecting an old thread but.....

Anyone know where i can buy cheap art shop thinners? Paying £10 for a small bottle seems like a con to me especially given the price of buying white spirit. Does the white spirit really eat into Klear/Hannants Satin varnishes that much?

I got a bottle Of this from here ages ago.
At £7.49 it won’t brake the bank , ok you’ll have to add postage so may be worth grabbing something else while your at it?
my bottle will probably out live me !
