Hi all well what sort of idiot am I, with looking after Pam I shouldn't do stupid things, I wanted to cut a thin piece of plywood and the Stanley knife was easier to get at than the hand saw, I slipped and cut through the top corner of my thumb (right through the nail ) it was hanging on by a thin piece of skin (I could even see the bone) I've put it in place and bandaged it up (I can't spend all night in a and e as there would be no one to look after Pam, I'm hoping when the bleeding has stopped I can superglue it together (boy is it throbbing) I've dosed myself up with my cocodamol I usually use for my arthritis so hopefully that will take the edge off if not I will pinch a couple of my missus, they're 3 times stronger than mine.I'm so cross with myself when I have bigger responsibilities.

It sounds to me that you have a very nasty cut. I know that you are against it but would it help if you called A&E in advance and explained the situation. Is there no one that could keep an eye on Pam for you. I know that you will regret not having done something about it later. Also, I can't imagine it being any easier to care for her with a thumb that is going to stick out like a, erm, sore thumb.

Thanks mate tbh the throb is down to a dullish throb now and the bleeding seems to be stopping, I can't really see what A and E could do they can't stitch through a nail (and trust me they're not removing it I've torn my nail off before and I recon that's the worst pain I've ever felt) I think all they would do is glue it anyway, plus I'm not sure I should drive after taking cocodamol, I've an underactive thyroid and the cocodamol make me sleepy. One of the problems with living in the middle of nowhere.

Bandaging it up and keeping it in the right place is good. I would not advise you to glue anything. I agree with Ian that you do need to get it looked at. I know this is difficult for you in your current situation, but failing A&E you could look at other options. Your own GP might be sympathetic to your situation for example. Definitely keep an eye on it, if it doesn't look or feel right you have to get it seen to.

Ken could you not call the out of hours doctors and explain that you can't leave Pam they might send a doctor out to you. If not I would seriously consider having someone take a look at it at he earliest possible time mate. You could end up with an infection it if it isn't dealt with properly.

Yep thanks mate will probably see GP in the morning throbbing is almost gone now, I will redress it before bed but I'm sure it will be fine.

Having four boys at home and having had the experience of sitting an A&E for hours shielding my sons  from other peoples fallout I can heartily recommend a Minor injuries unit instead. We are lucky to have one nearby and they do a great job of patching up my boys. They are normally quiet and are a lot quicker than an A&E.

Hope you get that fixed up Ken, its looks painful but I think you've done well with the dressing there, if your not going to get it looked, make sure you dress it again, but get some iodine swabs and clean it up, and disinfect it before you dress it up again. Change your dressing every 4-6 hours and keep disinfecting it every time you dress it up.

Hi all well i did another stupid thing today, took pam to the GP this morning as her ears were bleeding and I wanted to be sure there were no bad problems took the handbrake off not thinking and bashed my thumb on the handbrake surround the pain was so intense I thought I would pass out, I felt sick and of course I opened it up again so there was lots of blood anyway I sucked it up and took pam to GP's apparently she grazed the ear canal and that's where the bleeding was coming from, I must have looked a bit pale as the nurse asked if I was OK so pam blabed and told her so she checked it out and said it looked OK but that I had opened it up and should have gone to A and E in the first place (I know, I know, don't go on, you told me so, yada, yada, yada) she put some steri strips on and redressed it, pretty much the same as I did (minus the steri strips) I have got to say that really hurt, I've broken bones and (being a retired tattooist) I've done tattoos on myself for 9 hrs continuously but when I bashed my thumb on that bit of plastic that was the absolutely the worst pain I have ever felt, I've never come close to fainting before, I realise I've not experienced child birth but I will bet it was worse than that.

Ouch and double ouch. I'm glad that the gp nurse said it looks ok. 


I know only to well the pain of knocking a wound. Thumbs and toes. Got to love em.


I broke my little toe a couple of years ago and was walking around the house bare foot. Wham kicked the leg of the coffee table.

Ouch, I've broken my toe loads of times (once broken they are forever weakened) yep I've hobbled around the house with broken toes yep they are painful (must be something about extremitys) they always seem to hurt the most.

Thanks all, I'm hoping all will start to get back to normal, I have to say I'm feeling a bit like I attract bad luck (although this was purely down to my laziness) ( if I'd used the hand saw none of this would have happened) as an update apart from her ear (which again she was lucky is not permanently damaged) pam is making (as far as I'm concerned anyway) amazing progress, with a little help from me she got to the car and then out of the car into a where chair to the nurses room, which I think is remarkable in such a short time ( admittedly she is suffering tonight) but the fact she can walk at all in such a short time I find amazing( I keep telling her that the pain killers mask a lot and to be careful, but if you knew pam you would know I may as well talk to the wall) anyway just to say she's on the mend.
