in Latin (and Italian slang) it means "and again" or "second time" so I would assume it means improved or revised regarding aircraft.

Hope you don't mind me butting in Martin, but your question has started me thinking, Why did only the Russian Mikoyan-Gurevich company use this designation, as in MiG 15Bis and the MiG 21Bis ?

Was it just their personal choice, or a government designation?

Odd question maybe, but it's bugging me.

Tony.

It was used by several manufacturers , usually italian , where it probably originated ie. Fiat Cr32 bis the russians must have just borrowed it , as the others have said it just means 'second ' In the case of the MiG 21 it was the last variant and differed enough from all previous variants to be called a second version . cheers tony

Thanks Tony, didn't know any of that, I love this forum, ask a question and an answer pops up.

Cheers mate.

Tony.

Here's some useless info! A French friend lived at an apartment with "bis" in the address, something like 31 bis,rue de whatsit. He explained it would be like our 31a,next to,or above 31 :)

Cheers
