I wish to call on my learned modellers experience please

Painted this body more than 2 weeks ago and was perfect (I think) allowed it to dry then cured it as per manufacturer with heat and left it again then applied clear gloss and for 2 weeks + it has been fine but last night noticed it has done this it is not obvious until in a certain light and difficult to get a picture please look at where the roof meets the gutter and the windscreen pillar it is under the lacquer ?

It's difficult to see from pic but did you use cellulose paint. It's just from the pic it looks the the crazing effect you get when you spray anything plastic with cellulose paint.

What paint did you use Rob? The reason I ask is that I'm unaware of any model paint that specifies using heat for obvious reasons of melting the plastic.

The only paint I've used that requires heat are automotive paints in a bake oven.

Unfortunately, I'd say you've just been very unlucky & the paint has crazed probably in reaction to the clear coat. It's happened to me before & there seems no rhyme or reason for it.

However, just from the photo, it's very hard to see, so perhaps you can live with it?

Perhaps the paint reacted with the primers. I have heard of problems similar to what you are talking about.

Hi guys I am using createx colours with no primer as they stick to absolutely anything including cloth, glass leather absolutely anything and not had any problems thinking about your questions I did use a top coat I have not tried before a new one from plasticote? in a new aerosol that apparently works at any angle could be this I suppose?

Is it strange for this to take about 2 weeks to show itself?

Sorry about that, that was why I asked about if you used cellulose as that can take months to do that if it was only the clear coat (if you could bring yourself to do it as you've made such a good job so far) you could strip it off and start again.

It doesn't look bad enough for that from the photo though, I suppose you are the one who knows how it actually looks and if you can live with it.

I still think it looks like a good model and as I said before love the colour.

I'm aware that Createx do a fair few different types of paint. Which ones are you using?

Their Auto Air Colours should be good with any clear coat (says their web site).

They sure do make some wicked colours, I might have to try them one day when I am brave enough to do a car.

I would 'ALWAYS' recommend a primer under any paint coating.

The primer is designed to chemically bond to the surface it is applied to, giving a key for the following coatings.

The clear-coat 'PICKLING/SHRINKING' as it's known in the trade, is often when the top coating shrinks on curing. Or if the clear-coat is cellulose based this will also pickle the paint beneath.

Is the colour coat a 'Basecoat' (matt finish) which it probably will be if it is an automotive colour.

The reason I ask is, after a basecoat has been applied, it shouldn't stand more than 24hrs before the clear-coat is applied in the refinishing trade.

There are many reasons for this, but one of the main reasons is contamination from the atmosphere, can lay a coating on the basecoat, then be trapped by the subsequent clear-coat.

Expansion contraction of the coatings can also occur due to varying temperature changes.

I could go on and on, as there are myriad reasons for inter-coat reactions.

Not a lot of help I know, but it may give an insight into the many problems that can occur with different paint make-ups.

Thank you for your info and comments you guy's are a wonderful resource.

I think I have it now 'plastikote' is a naughty product that does not want to play nice with the other paints this just happened when I tried to quickly change the colour of the doors to matt black with another plastikote aerosol,I will now avoid these cans.

It's good that you've discovered the culprit Rob!

Mind you, that's an interesting effect on the doors, I might experiment with some of that stuff.

There are many specialist paints available to provide, crackle finish, crazed finish, marble finish, vreeble etc etc.etc.

Some are even available in aerosol cans at Hobby Craft outlets.

Others are available from a company called Specialisedpaints.com, who also provide them in small airbrush sized containers, that can be used by modellers.
