discussion What primer colours for what colour ranges please?

Hello

Is there, please, a broad ruling covering the primer shades versus final colours?

I'm particularly interested in matt black as a final colour. Will Valejjo grey primer do? I alway use Valejjo grey but perhaps shouldn't?

I use grey primer for everything apart from special finishes (like Alclad). I occasionally use white under a yellow top coat.

I'm with Steve on that one. Having said that, I use a white primer under white 'cause white's a bugger some times.

Black primers are good under silvers and golds, I think they give depth.

Good old neutral grey primers can be used for any colour. General rule of thumb = light colour; Light undercoat (primer).

The most important thing is that the primer is dry and HARD before you give it a quick rub and wipe before painting the top coat.

Aidan Vallejo have black primer. They also do 3 different grey primers.

Problem is if you used a black primer it makes life difficult to see the top coats as they are applied.

Another diffulty is that most aircraft have two or three colours. For most I would choose Vallejo Grey.

For the Catalina I built I used a white also for the Harrier which was was 50% white. There were 3 basic finishing colours on the Catalina RAF type blue yellow & white. If it had been all yellow I would have chosen a yellow primer. On the Harrier white primer for Mid Blue & White with out any probles with the blue on white. For all other models I have used a grey primer which has done the trick.Even with the quite large yellow areas on the Catilina with white primer I lost count of the number of Yellow top coats.

Apart from the stickability of primers one aspect is to make sure they obliterate fillers which are made by many manufacturers to annoy us "white". If you do not obliterate well & truly when using Yellow they will shine through & through each coat.

Funny babies never have any problem with one application of yellow on white !

I use Vallejo white primer for everything.Mainly because Ive got a big bottle of the stuff bought at the Telford show last year.I really like this primer.It gives a very nice,smooth finish.Ive sprayed Humbrol enamels,Tamiya acrylics and Vallejo paints on top of it with good results.

I use a variety of Vallejo primers...

Grey - my standard one

Black - I preshade with this and prime dark recessed areas with it as well as use it under a bare metal finish.

White - an alternative for grey for use where the plastic colour is too close to the grey. I also use it more generally as a white airbrush paint

Bronze Green - mostly for pre-shading but also as another more general alternative primer to the grey and white for colour differentiation where the darker primer does not matter.

I usualy punish very much my models; with all kind of weathering, washes, chipping. So my little advice is: I can say that the color panzer grey and yellow panzer (primers) are the most resistant.

Ps: think the modulation effect with black color is quite difficult...and the shadows will always dissapear, so you can't count with the under primer.
