Hi all;

I'm making a 1/48 Spit Mk XIVc, to be finished in 41 Sqn (my old lot!) markings. The trouble is, the size of the code letters on the fuselage - I don't have decals to fit. I've got some 24" ones, but they look too big. Any ideas?

I could be tempted to say 18" looking at the size of them compared to the Sky tail band and the roundel on the fuselage.

Tricky, you'll have to go with what looks right. The original order for code letters had the get out "smaller letters are to be used only when the space available on the fuselage makes such a course unavoidable." Since it was virtually impossible to fit full size codes on a Spitfire, though not for want of trying, all sorts of sizes occurred.

I reckon those are a little more than 18", my guesstimate from other known markings came out at 21", though 20" must be more likely.

Cheers

I've just had a brainwave, and measured the 41 Sqn code decals in the Airfix MkXII box - a tad over 1cm, so making them about 20", give or take. And of course, it looks like no-one makes 20" 1/48 code decals!

Spitfire Squadrons were given a special dispensation to use 20" letters, due to a lack of available space, for 24",

between the bottom of the opened canopy and the top of the wingroot fairing.
