discussion ww2 Russian aircraft markings?

have just got hold of a cheep LA-7 fighter. The kit is old and I think Polish. there are 8 different painting schemes but all with the same decal markings? did the Russians not have any registration markings to tally too pilot or squadron during the second world war?

Hi paul , the soviet schemes have always usually been quite simple , national markings and a bort number . Occasionally you can get a slogan on the side or more often different coloured areas (striped rudder , coloured cowling etc.) but the actual aircraft markings are always the same . The onme thing that differed about these is the colour of the bort number and the style of the red star -as a general guide , the earlier stars had a 3d effect with one half of each arm in a darker shade of red, a bit later and they were all one shade without borders and later still with a white or sometimes yellow border. So even though it seems they all look the same its right ,unless its Kozhedubs La 7 bort no 27 , thats a whole different can of worms!! heres a link to a good site http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/ hope this helps , cheers tony

OOps ! Actually Paul Its fortunate youve got this one. The reason I'm saying that is because theres been a lot of recent info come to light regarding the correct schemes worn by this aircraft during Kozhedubs use of it. The general concensus is that the colours given by KP (the kit maker) are wrong ,probably based on repainted museum replicas and dodgy black and white photos. Its far from a disaster though as the kit itself is quite good despite its age and there is plenty of info regarding correct colour schemes now (look on the link under 'colour profile articles ' halfway down theres a whole article devoted to the various misconceptions of Kozhedubs machine and right at the bottom , several likely schemes as worn during various stages of its service). If you want to try another Soviet , then the Revell re-issue of the Italeri La 5 is a nice little kit , complete with great decals (accurate colour schemes too) and can usually be found for around a fiver. cheers tony

Cheers mate the kit looks good with lots of details but it does have a massive amount of flash. will look at the link for paint schemes.
