The speed at which you chaps work and the quantity of kits you complete is amazing! I assume that as your skills develop you can put kits together pretty quickly.

But even so....

I was wondering how many kits you chaps complete, say in a month or a fortnight? And how much time per day is spent on the modelling of course.

I arrive here 2 years ago!

And I have many open threads, more than I want :) ,

but finished models with all this time are between six or seven, no more...

I can't do modelling every day, only few ones on a week...

I try to do about two hours...but this turns about only one hour of work. Always looking, thinking or simply choice the paint colors...or just have my mind relaxed ;) .

Resuming ...I'm not the most productive member here!

I think as you...I'm amazed with some members here ;)

Im sort of semi retired, but I still work and Im married so theres always plenty to do around the house, but I try to get some bench time in about 5 times a week for 2 or 3 hours each time, ive found that with more commissions to do it seems I do more modelling for other people than for me, but its a way of paying for the hobby

It varies Aidan but I suppose an average for me would be around 2-3 months , maybe less if its a smaller kit . I dont get in the shed as often as i'd like but maybe the dark nights and cold weather mean i wont be sitting around in the garden as much now , so i might get more build time! If I went in the shed every night for a couple of hours i could get one done in a few weeks but I'd probably end up divorced!!! cheers tony

When I'm at home I can churn them out! I can do a typical kit in about a month, but I can devote as much time as I want to. In this I'm lucky

If I'm working, which invariably means I'm away from home I can't build at all! That's not so lucky :)

Cheers

The commissioning work you do Paul - is this scratch building?

Aiden quite a bit is scratch building but occasionally I get asked to do an OOB kit, or some box art, I am hoping that in the near future I can earn a decent living from it ;)

Forgive my curiosity but what type of person would want an OOB kit building for them? I'm being niaive here.

Aiden there are plenty of people that want figure kits making, mainly because they cant do them themselves, ive had some sent to me that the owner has had a go and couldn't or wouldn't complete it, and ive re done it. I get about 7 or 8 requests a year, it doesn't sound a lot but as it takes me a couple of months to paint a kit I have to turn some down.

Yes of course - figure kits. I was thinking of tanks and cars and planes. Great way to earn a living - beats working! Best of luck with that - I hope it works out for you.

Aidan. Depends on which scale.

1/72 Then about 4 to 6 weeks.

1/48 about 12 weeks.

Lot depends on the intricate nature. 1/48 Harrier straight forward 6 weeks . 1/48 Swordfish as intricate as it comes 12 weeks.

Prefer intricate.

I used to have " dog in the park syndrome" as in I bought lots of kits and rushed to get em all done. I was averaging 1 a month they weren't bad builds but I decided I wanted to slow it right down so now it can take months for me to get it right. I was pleased to have a club member say to me that since I slowed down my models have improved greatly and to be honest I agree.

I've got two commission builds on right now one's a birthday present the other is for a friend at work that wants a ship built and he dosent have the time or skills to make one.

I am a 1 model at a time guy I like to do research and read about the subject , if I was building a diorama it could take up to 3 months , I like to think that I am getting better as I go along -quality over quantity ,after all you invest a lot of time and money in the models and want the best you can produce

Shift work plays havoc with model building. So does moving house. But when I get going I can turn out a 1/72 model in about two weeks if I have no work interruptions.

I often wonder the same thing!

Takes me months to build a simple kit - too many distractions!

The word work should be consined to the swear word dictionary!!! I don't know about anyone else but I generally have around 3 kits on the go at any one time. One is usually what I call a quick build (OOB). The others will have bits added ie a/m bits or hydrolic lines etc added. The detail kits I have on the go at the moment have been on going for around 6 months. these could probably have been finished by now but for family matters that needed seeing to hey ho thats life.

Well my modelling time is often dictated by how busy the misses is. If she has a lot to do I get loads of model time....

As for how long a kit takes... I have built a 1/48 Spitfire in a weekend Friday eve to Sunday night.

I have also a 1/72 scale HMS Snowberry that has been moored at the back of the desk for three years almost.

Normally its one at a time these days. And trying to keep it to one a month.

My current build is just coming into week three and is almost done.

Its all a question of how much detail there is and how trouble free things go.

i could build a 1/48 in about 2 weeks on and off,but lately due to dropping of planes coz the left arm wont play ball at the moment,i just sit and watch the models being built on here lol, though the feeling is coming back to left arm(the only time you know pain is good)lol

That's an interesting point Laurie, when you say intricate is best. It makes me wonder what the motivation for modeling is. If we built intricate kits all of the time, that may suggest that the compelxity and the skills were the challenge. But if we also build not so intricate kits, then why? I'm just thinking aloud!

Thread owner
I think you have bought up 2 very good points, as you said we build intricate kits to test our skill and its a challenge, but surley we do the same with not so intricate kits, isnt the challenge then to turn a simple kit into a something not so simple, for instance if i build a mini art 1/16 figure they are cheap and quite basic, the challenge then is to turn it into a great figure by adding extra detail or positioning it differently or even changing the whole thing completely, as in this one

I did this one several years ago and added various bits to it. It must also be the same with any other kit unless its straight OOB, you could do a hundred panzers but they will all be different some how.
