Airfix 1/72 Ju 88

I've had no time for modelling for months, but I have a couple of weeks in which I shall attempt this, strictly OOB.


The kit is the absolutely appalling 1960s vintage Ju 88 from Airfix. It has a lot of raised detail, most of which I've sanded off and nothing fits very well. Apart from that it's great. I've done some basic construction and am now wondering what to do with the transparencies which appear to have been made for a different kit and have no sign of framing whatsoever...you've got to love a challenge

I will be using the kit decals for A6+HH. Contrary to the instructions this was NOT Werner Baumbach's aircraft but a Ju 88 D-1 W.Nr. 1067 belonging to 1.(F)/120, a reconnaissance unit, and regular mount of Staffelkapitan Hptm. Helmuth Orlowski and Beobachter Oblt. Fritz Heidenreich. This aircraft was destroyed in air attack on the ground at Forus Airfield in 1942.

I had this kit and struggled so much it was one reason why I got a hatred of making aircraft.

I have the new 1/72 Do17z in the stash probably a much better kit but I'm unsure as to whether I will ever build it.

Don't what your problem is with it, Steve. It seemed fine when I built it. In about 1967. When I was 11. They even made it in a nice light blue plastic so I didn't have to paint the underneath. I probably didn't paint the top either.

Good luck with this - was recently given the Revell Ju 88A-4 from the same era... a bit spartan on detail at the very least! Really looking forward to seeing what you can do with this as some inspiration for me.

I actually bought one of these a couple of years ago with the good intentions of bringing it up to date. When I looked at the bits in the box I realised just what a task I had ahead and pretty much put it to the back of the shelf!! I can appreciate what you are doing here Steve and I think you are doing an amazing job already.


Maybe one day I'll pluck up the courage to have another go.......................maybe!
