On Friday the Typhoons out of RAF Conningsby were 'turning and burning' high over the Humber, a lot of noise from the afterburners from those tiny dots way up there!

Miko (I really miss RAF Binbrook and the daily symphony of twin Avons passing over my home)

Apologies for the picture quality, these are stills from a much more satisfying video. Popped home to see Mum and Dad briefly yesterday and was treated to a private airshow. Now while the MIdlands Air show was taking place this weekend, they are a good 20 miles from Ragley Hall so this may have been a pre show practice, but was great to see this beautiful machine being thrown round the sky for 15mins. According to FlightRadar this is a MK XIX Spit, although it did not sound like the usual (amazing) Merlin engine. I'm sure someone knowledgeable will know why. Also saw the Red Arrows fly over but whilst I was driving, so no pics.

I agree Langley the Mk.XIX did use the Griffon, still sounds beautiful though :smiling4:

Well yesterday being a cloudless sky over Portland we had numerous puddle jumpers fly over the island, once round Portland Bill lighthouse and disappeared to the North.
Unlike today, 100% cloud cover and the only thing we saw was the Coastguard rescue helicopter, in this case a AW189. Spent a while in Westcliffe so I can only assume someone didn't obey the cliff collapse warnings!!! Hope they're ok.

That explains it. Very similar noise, but not quite.

Oh I quite agree, not quite the same level as a merlin though!

We had the A400 Atlas fly over us on its way to and from the Pompey flypast this morning. No pictures though, by the time I know it’s there, it’s gone :tears-of-joy:

Saw the same type flying low up the Conwy Valley this morning - it flew over my head whilst I was driving out across the bridge next to Conwy castle - alas no piccy's as I was driving.

It's a big beast when seen at low level!

Yep, they regularly low level over us, sometimes at night. Weirdly quieter when coming and noisier when going though….

Wonder if it was the one that flew past Veterans en-route to France for the celebrations?

It would be cool if it was.

We quite often see them flying up the Conwy valley, possibly flying up to RAF Valley.

Last summer we had one off the coast here in the Portland exercise areas for hours every day for nearly two weeks. Quiet for its size.

Agreed, they are big beasts - I used to see them come in and out of RAF Brize Norton when I lived near there - much bigger than the old Hercy bird.

As part of the D-Day memorial just saw a Globemaster III and a Spitfire fly over head, the loudest was actually the Merlin in the Spit. Wonderful to watch them though.
