Rather than just have the box modules stacked loosely on top and beside each other the magnets provide some rigidity to the structure holding them together. I was quite surprised at how strong they are and I expect them to be very effective.
Ahh, that makes sense. That way you don't have to fasten them together, very clever. Cheers Barry

Got on and built a couple of units last night and I am very pleased with how they go together, no issues at all and the Gorilla Glue is perfect for the job.

Above are the completed tool rack and kichen roll holder. They stack as below, held together by the magnets.

They are not in the position they will end up in relative to each other. I will post again when I get a few more modules done as you will get a better idea of how it will look when done.

By the way, the paper holder does not work for the thick expensive kitchen roll but the normal bog-stanard roll you get fits perfectly.

Well Graham, I spent on these units what I would estimate to be less than I spend on two average models including materials (bear in mind I build 1/32 aircraft and mostly the expensive ones). Thinking about it that way, it does not seem so much to spend..... But it will make for a better organised work area and my other half will like how neat and tidy it all looks and that is a 'good sale' to her and will help save marital strife when we are living together (not that we are actually married!).......

I just love the flexibility this modular system offers being able to buy what units you want and to fit them in a way to suit you. I actually think a four high stack would work with these, provided you have the corners for stablity.

That proves one thing then Barry! Either I use to much Gorilla glue or the wood glue is different from the all purpose stuff

I've just had my delivery, each box was 36kg, needless to say my back is twitching a little, I've had a look at a couple and I can't see how they can do them for the price, they look a quality product, looking forward to seeing yours fully assembled.

Oh and when I was placing the order my wife said she didn't think people would order the kitchen roll holder, I said the will, and I was right

LOL John, I was in two minds about the kitchen roll holder but when I planned my set up I realised I would have the space and thought why not? I now think it really adds to the set-up.

As for quality - yes I agree, you are spot on. It is a real quality product and a good price.

Thanks for sharing this Barry, I have been hanging on to see your thoughts on putting it all together. I think I am going to have to splash out on my work area as well. Although John I am afraid I will go to the Polish source to keep my spending in Euros, the exchange rate although improving is a killer at the moment.

I don't blame you, the shipping I would have to charge for sending outside the UK would also make it far more expensive, some of the modules weigh over 2kg

Just dawned on me that around 18 months ago I posted a link to a company selling the very same modules, or as near as damn it. They were somewhere in Europe as I recall.

Still added them to my ultimate man cave plans if ever this bloody house resells

On the matter of keeping warm, in the corner of the dining room (which is quite big, especially for a bungalow), I have an L-shaped double desk (two IKEA ones), one leg being for the computer and the other for modelling (just assembly - I do painting upstairs in a corner of the attic bedroom). To keep warm (the dining room is not fully heated) I have a cheap fan heater on top of the floor-mounted computer box, pointing at an angle towards me and down along under the computer desk. With a drawer unit at the left end and a floor-mounted drawer unit at the right, and the desk top, the heat is trapped and flows out towards my body. The heat is confined in the right space. When I turn to the other desk for modelling, I turn the fan towards that. This is effective and very economical and I have to switch the heater on only now and then. Confine the heat is my approach.

Having an outdoor shed of some type, while spacious, costs a lot to heat, I think, even if well insulated. As Steve (Stona) implied, tramping through the snow to a shed at the bottom of the garden is unattractive.

Here is how far I have got so far. They are stacked in the right position but these two rows will go on top of drawer units making three rows in all. I will do the bottom row next over today and Saturday and post the 3 stack Monday. That will mean I will have the left hand side all done, half way there!!

The corner units were more of a challenge, fitting the back panels squarely in position. Got there in the end and I expect future corner units will be easier. I learned to work them slowly from one side allowing the glue to bind before adding the next. Other than that this has been problem free and the result is well worth the effort.

Hi Barry just caught up with this and what can I say wowser!! That looks very impressive indeed.

I only have a small back bedroom as my man cave but I would love to convert it into something awe inspiring like what you have got.

I've watched a few you tube vids on the modular system and even got the emails from John at SMS and I'm really tempted.

My workspace is limited but I have 2 rows of 6 drawers and unfortunately the paints I have ( lots of ) are all hidden away. My wife gives me free range to design my ultimate cave but she is very watchful of the strings even with my funds so I'll have to make do for now ( I'll wear her down though ) :P

                            Looks really good

                              Good luck with that!!!

I get some similar issues with my lady but over time you can make progress. She originally was insistent on a tv no bigger than 42" in our new home but I have managed to get that up to 48" and am working on getting it to 55" before we buy. Still short of getting her to agree to a 6 speaker surround sound system though, only got her to a sound bar so far... work in progress there.

As for the man-cave, she has not agreed to all the display shelving I want for my 1/32s yet or the positioning of the existing display shelves so still some work on that front!!!

You have to get her to listen to a good system. There are various ways of doing this. I went for the dangerous method of splashing out on a Kef/Denon system without telling her. I was in hot water until she heard it, now she loves it.

I think its is a problem today that the sort of specialist 'Hi-Fi' shops that I knew as a youth, in which you could actually listen to equipment you couldn't afford, are now very few and far between. It's actually quite difficult to listen to any kind of system in a realistic environment, which leaves you at the mercy of the technical information and often unreliable reviews.

                                Cheers
