Well I did some more units this morning and won't have time to do more until Monday evening.






That's the left side done. Eight more units to build. I will post a pic when it's all finished. The drawer units do take more time to put together.

Looks like a great "man cave" there.


If you are not going to use the garage doors, could they not be swapped out with a window unit... be a bit warmer.


Love those model zone units and I have plans on a system with them myself on day.

My missus is a commercial property lawyer and she had read all that small print the rest of us don't read and there is a covenant on our development stopping us from changing the outside appearance of the house. That does not stop us from putting in a stud wall behind the garage doors or even a brick wall..... but the missus has an odd idea that we might sometimes use the garage as a garage. No-one ever does that! Eventually she may see that.

I have completed the modules and this is how my bench top will look when it's set up.










I decided to fix only one drawer into a 3 drawer module to give me another shelf. I may put a drawer inside if it improves access






Above you can see the partitions in the drawers . I have not glued them in place. Some will be left I. While other won't have partitions.






Above to the right is the module where I fitted only one drawer on a 3 drawer module. I have placed a second drawer in the top, without the fitting, as I may or may not end up using it.


I am very pleased with how they went together and they will certainly serve their purpose creating a good environment to work in.


They also seem nice and strong as well.


I will transport them to the house to await fitting when the carpenter has done the workbench. He is booked for the 18th April so I may not be posting any progress on this thread again for a couple of weeks.

Roll-Royce quality setup (including the posh embossed paper towelling!) Very nice. The holders in the middle and on the right are for bigger bottles than those on the left, three sizes in all it seems. What makes of paint (I assume acrylic) are these designed for: Vallejo, Tamiya, etc.? Do the holders cover all popular bottles?


I see a problem: with lots of tools etc. neatly stored away, you won't be able to find anything!

I've just ordered my set, although I've gone for separate paint racks (again from their range) because I just couldn't configure the number of paints I had into the space available in the modular system. I substituted the dedicated modular paint racks (with the holes) for the shelving type (shown on your left hand side) the thinking being that I can fit more bottles on those. I also ordered a paint station which has holes for the various paint in it, my thinking here is that I can select the paints for the particular model from the racks and transfer them to the station. My work area is roughly the same as yours with another desk at right angles (connected by a desk corner piece) which I use for photography.


You must be chomping at the bit to get started! And it will feel really good when you have everything you need to hand.

The individual slots are made for the Vallejo size eye dropper bottles Steve that also fits AKI, MIG and Hataka paints among others. They do bigger paint modules as well to fit Tamiya, Gunze etc size bottle. The corner module on the left is called a Universal module to take all types. In all I have room for 156 Vallejo size bottles which is just enough!

Barry is right about the HobbyZone system, by it's very nature it is very adaptable.


I hadn't realised (until reading your thread) that magnets are used to hold the units together - very clever!


At the moment I'm having a bit of a spring clean - not just the modelling room but the entire house and garage. I'm having a purge of all things not used, surplus to requirement, that don't fit, or simply serve as clutter. I'm then organising what I have left so that everything has 'a home' - that's the theory anyway! Everything else is on hold until this mammoth task is finished. This is the chief reason I ordered the HobbyZone stuff in the first place.


I do like the set up Barry I think we have a pretty similar modelling environment!

I like your setup Barry, I've managed to build one but I'm selling them faster than I can get them I like the magnet idea, they seem strong enough to keep them in place.

Just one more thought...


From a distance it kind of looks like you're building a scale replica of Highbury/Goodison/Loftus Road/Elland road (insert your favourite stadium). Maybe it's time to get the subbuteo out!
