Looking at the movable chain for my upcoming 1/6 Honda CRF 1000 Africa Twin build, this should be interesting.
Four sprues with 70 odd parts on each.

And a steel roller for every pin.

At least Tamiya give you a jig to build chain sections on and a tool to press the side link plates on which should make it a bit easier. I will need to pay attention though as the holes in the plates are tapered so must be fitted correctly.

Looks fun. Nothing is glued? Just a taper fit? It will be interesting to see how you get on and how flexible and secure the finished chain is.

The sprue says it’s ABS, so it can’t be glued at all with most normal model cement.

Plastruct ABS solvent is readily available though Jakko.

Not around here In any case, I think Tamiya used ABS exactly because normal modelling cement won’t work on it, and because it’s stronger than polystyrene, which seems important for a working motorcycle chain. Quite why it has to work, though, I’m not sure. Does the kit have a working engine too?

… as long as you don’t accidentally glue the front sprocket to the engine

I'll follow your build 'cause I never saw an individual link motorbike chain.
First thing came to my mind is that some graphite powder should help in keeping it flexible.

I built a few links of the chain today.


The chain will take a while to build as all the small parts need to be really clean to allow the plates and rollers to fit but at least you can build it in sections then join it all up.
