HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Part 67 1st primer

Well I was right after the 1st primer coat I had loads of filling to do there the yellowish areas you can see in the painted surfaces also had some major filling where the rear bulkhead with the word HOOD inscribe on it meets with the hull all in all though not as bad as I expected during the priming I managed to ping on of the the tiny pipes off the bulkhead luckily it landed on the deck and was easily visible
I’m not to worried about the paint on the main decking as we have wooden decking to glue down on top of it and as a by product it should remove all the little gaps at the bottom of the bulkheads once fitted anyway I’m now waiting for the filler to set then sand it down and then add another layer of paint afterwards

    Regards

    Colin

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Part 67 1st set of Decking

Hello again with superstructure resanded and primed then top coated we are now ready for the 1st sets of decking
These were very thin laminate is it coconut bark or similar that they use anyway the bottom line is you have to cut it out as there’s no laser cutting these pieces so with trepidation I made my 1st cut using a model knife brand new blade and steel straight edge I soon gave this up as it was impossible to do curves and besides you have to custom fit the decking to your model necessitating several fittings and cuttings to get an exact fit they have allowed for this by giving you a 3 mm waist border around each piece which you trim to fit your arrangement
With this in mind I resorted to some very fine scissors the type that look like tweezers but have blades instead of pointed tips this allowed me to cut the curves where required
After that it was a case of gluing each section into place there not perfect but hopefully the decking above will conceal most of the errors etc anyway here’s what we have at present you’ll also notice I managed to ping off a inner door during the deck fitting so that will be re glued after the decks have dried and set firm

CHEERS Colin its looking brilliant pity she isnt R/C AN COULD SAIL as when i build my hulls have to get them treated with sandin sealer an painted so the hull dont warp but as yours goin in a glass case i dont suppoce it matters an yes in my opinion looking at your bismark hood was clearly outdated an all ready an old ship an the bismark was brand spankin new no wonder she dint stand a chance against bismark ps im really enjoyin your build keep at it :thumb2: :thumb2: :thumb2: :thumb2:
chris b pps an do you make your own glass cases as they look big an from what ive seen they are fairly exspensive in this size ?

                  Hi Colin
Really taking shape now. Those last few photos show just how big this model is. Great work on all the fiddly detail parts.

Reply the case the Bismarck is in came from Hachette cost £169.99 + £40.00 for the coffee table it’s stood on checking on various suppliers separate Perspex to do a similar thing come in at around £120.00 and that doesn’t include the base or another coffee table as i like them as support units so you’re looking at about £200.00 per display case either way there is no cheaper alternative other than a wooden one with a clear front panel which would lend itself to a painted background and possibly a foil seascape might try that for the Hood who knows

                    Regards

                    Colin

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Part 69 More Decking pieces and Hose Reels

Good morning this time we have more deck details to add and the hose reels mounted on the various bulkheads not much to add other than anyone building this kit or contemplating building it then I would recommend doing the hose reel holders in parts 40 44 and then jump to this stage ie 69 and fit the hoses into the holders then stick the holders and hoses as one piece in this stage as measuring and cutting them as I had to was a right pia

                        Regards

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Part 70 Support pillars

Well we’ve reached halfway stage 70 this time it involved painting 3 lengths of wooden poles and cutting them then gluing them onto the deck I didn’t bother adding instructions photos for this section as it was a case of paint the poles then measure off 18.5mm and cut to that length 18 times for the thin ones and 6 for the thick one so here goes making sure each one is level in both planes ie not leaning left or right and not backwards or forwards

HMS Hood 1/200 Hachette /Amati Wooden kit Build Part 71 Front side panels leading to the forecastle part of the ship

Good evening so here’s another small section completed and I was very surprised by the way these 2 deck pieces fitted into place so tight no glue was needed only to secure the outer wall panels in place
I see I have a gap on the starboard side when it’s dry and set I will attend to that with a bit of plastic card or more likely spare brass work

                                Hi Colin

Apologies got behind on this. It's coming on very nicely indeed.

I don't think I've come across such a 'hybrid' model in terms of materials before.

I've obviously seen lots of plastic with a heap of PE thrown at it and the odd wooden deck for a plastic kit but never a kit were the wood is such such an integral part of the main structure, with the plastic providing the 'detail'.

It's been very interesting to follow.

                                Keep up the great work.

                                Andrew
