Can anyone explain why insurance companies have such wildly different prices. I'm looking for a new motor and typed in all the details into a comparison site. The lowest quote I got was around £750 - but the highest, for the same vehicle is £18500!
 
I would like to know myself the insurance company that I had been with for many years wanted £800 that was up 300 on the last year a quick shop around I got it down to £300 so I snapped it up
 
The ridiculous price is because they don’t want you particularly but if you’re determined to use they will insure you!! But at a cost!!!

I've had this often. Like you I shop around and get it cheaper. It happened with our house insurance a few months ago. They wanted 30% more for some reason. Anyway, after ringing them they gave us a much cheaper rate with hardly any increase on last year. They must make a massive profit from people who just take the default renewal.
 
The time of day you apply for a quote via a web site also has an effect on the price.
 
I had a Range Rover when I got it it was £330 to insure, 2 years later it was £1300, so I sold it

They try to tell you it has to do with inflation, the war in Ukraine and any other things like paying for Two-Tiers box at Arsenal... But in reality it is your post code and the environment you live in (culture). I was the same a couple of months ago, quoted over £3000 for the year and without breakdown included. A few days later got an email from the Compare company and there was Esure at £1200 including AA recovery.
Should state that I do not work for Esure or get any gifts from them, my clothes are all bought by myself, I have the Oxfam reciepts to prove it.
 
The main cause of the current premium increase is a sharp rise in claim costs. There are a number of reasons for this, but a lot of it is still to do with a shortage of parts as a result of the Covid lockdowns. It's not uncommon for repairers to have to wait longer for parts which extends the repair time, and in turn the length of time that a courtesy/hire car has to be provided. Additionally, the costs of the part itself is now much higher. Teh last official figures I saw suggested claim costs are now over 50% more than they were 5 years ago.

WHAT car YOU GONNA buy Dave a R/R ? for that much money WOW an im moaning at 450 quid for my car insurance an thats protected my no claim at 50% as i used to have 70 % no claim but for some reason they have done away with my 70 % an took it down to 50 % so my answer is get a smaller car like i have an do away with your merc just my thoughts on the subject

YEA so they sold abroad an my freind has a fairly new range rover 3 litre an i was amazed when he told me that the rd tax is 750 quid a yr whereas my car is 35 quid a yr as small eninge 1200 cc an its in very good nick so that car should see me out of drivein an im happy with it

Yep, most of them end up up initially in Northern Cyprus, then across to Turkey and on to the Middle East.

I'm downsizing from my Merc E280 to a Merc C180. OK, not much of a downsize, but I can't keep the battery charged on my E280 diesel as I only drive about 15 miles a week - the continuous stop/start soon uses up the charge - and that distance doesn't give the battery time to recharge properly. Hopefully a petrol engine uses less to start. I used my last C180 for much the same sort of driving and never had a problem in 5 years.

I've looked at lots of these shoebox-on-a-roller-skate smaller cars and I'm not impressed. I want a car that I get into rather than one I put on!

Well that's disappointing! Why wouldn't they want such a thoroughly decent chap like me on their books?

I got another question. A couple of years ago, I had a minor bump in a car parking bay at my local supermarket which was absolutely my fault. I spoke to the other driver and we exchanged numbers and insurance details. I asked him to get a quote and I would pay for the damage rather than losing my no-claims bonus. I heard nothing for a week and phoned him. He told me he hadn't had time to get a quote and he'd get back to me. I tried again a week later and he still hadn't done anything.

Anyway, as I didn't hear from him or my insurance company I left it and thought no more about it.

Yesterday I tried to insure another car which I want to buy today. The cheapest online quote was from Admiral for £900, but when I came to pay they're telling me it has gone up to £1300 because of a claim made against me regarding my accident. I checked with my original insurers and they have no record of any such claim.

If the guy who's car I bumped put in a claim with his insurance company, surely they would have contacted my insurers for the damages? I don't understand why they wouldn't want to claim their money back. And if there has been no claim against me, how did Admiral get details of the incident and why are they trying to charge me extra?

Since this incident I have insured three different cars with three different insurers and none of them have commented or charged me extra for previous claims and all have credited me with 6 years no-claims bonus.
 
From what I can gather Insurance for cars is insane in the UK. I saw a youtube of a guy that got told his insurance will not be renewed at expiry. They had got tits up. Had approval for £1mil of trade. insured for £6mil trade. so they got shut down.
A policeman in the same video also commented that with over a million UNINSURED drivers on the roads in the UK some one has to pay their insured sum as well. He also explained that the value of the car is often the smallest sum in a claim. A car skids out, takes out a brick wall, a lamppost and a traffic light before rolling and comint to a stop. Yes he bent his car. A wall will need replacing and any damage to the surrounding area. A lamppost will need changing. Cost of that and installation- Then the Traffic light. Those things are not cheap. That was a cheap example. If he had taken out a pedestrian, a couple of cars and a lorry.... The point being that insurance does not just look at the 450quid wreck that is going to be insured but the potential thousands of pounds in "street furniture, wages, compensation, other parties."
This can all be boiled down to a simple way of explaining. They are greedy buggers. Profits in the hundreds of millions, but still the price goes up.
 
Unfortunately for car insurance "Profits in the hundreds of millions" is simply untrue, most insurers are currently losing profits from car insurance.

Gern, possibly in your case Admiral were the insurer for the third party at the time, so they have a record of the claim where others do not.

Alas no, so it's still a bit of a mystery. Still, I've got to ring them tomorrow to cancel the deal so maybe I'll get more info then.

PS I'm cancelling the deal for a really odd reason. I can't do mobile banking from my cheapo cheapo mobile so I transferred the money to my brother's account. When we tried to pay for the car via a credit transfer, my brother's bank refused to transfer the funds to the dealer! If the bank doesn't trust him for some reason, I'm not taking the risk.
