Andrew's 1/72 Airfix Typhoon IB (starter kit)

Thread owner
That's looking very nice Andrew. Glad you got the pilot in - they never seem to fit with legs attached!

Good progress seems to be a well engineered kit

Looks kinda cool in black, they'd've made a formidable night attack aircraft for sure

I like to call it the 'Douglas Bader' effect!!

Miko (what if ophile!)

coming together nicely Andy.

Nice work so far Andy, it looks great in black.

Coming along very well Andrew. To be fair you did a good job on the old kit as well 'cos the new Airfix kits are really nice to build and comes with nearly all the bells and whistles.

Cheers,
Wabble

Typhoon is looking good to go Andrew 👍

Thanks chaps. Glad you're liking it!! Update to follow shortly.

Miko - I have do the major surgery aka the 'Douglas Bader effect' on pretty much every Airfix figure I do....🤨

Ok chaps...

Mottling done.

I don't like blaming tools for poor workmanship but in this case the Airfix/Humbrol paints meant I couldn't do my usual fine lines and build it up.

In this case it was hard to get paint coming out consistently, not like with my Vallejo Model Air and so it's a bit more botchy and less sharp than usual, with plenty of overspray - as you will see.

The paint is definitely more course than Vallejo. My Vallejo normally feels very smooth post-mottling, but with this I can feel the paint, like very fine sand paper.

I was using my usual 0.2mm AB that I use for mottling at this scale but next time I'll try a slightly larger needle to see if that helps. I also somehow managed to scrape a bit of primer off underneath the cockpiy, but I can touch that up later.

Next up the underside medium sea grey

ACW as usual.

Looks good Andrew. I use a 0.3 needle with my Humbrol enamels and thin 50:50, give or take. Gives a reasonable finish that is smoothed later by gloss. One good thing about enamel is you can lightly sand it smooth without losing too much of it.

Andrew,
despite the paint issues it's looking very good.

A belated thanks chaps! Some of the paint has flown. I'm just waiting to get the time to do the green!

Joe - In this case, I was using the acrylic paint pots that come with the kit.....won't do that again with the matt paints but I have to say the metallic one sprayed very nicely!

Looks good despite your issues with the paint. I reckon you're right about the paints being a bit too "coarse" to go through a 0.2 nozzle. Best use what you're used to.

A very belated thanks Jim! I will definitely be sticking to Vallejo and AK 3rd Gen in the future, as I never have any issues with that through a 0.2m needle

Morning chaps!!

So a belated double update due to a range of issues and illness.

First up is a shot the main body and sub assemblies with the paint all done ahead of the pre-decal clear gloss varnish. I took this over a week ago.

Decals were finished yesterday. I'm not sure if the starter kits decals are Cartograph or not but they didn't go down quite as well as they normally do with Airfix kits - not Tamiya thickness bad but just not usual Cartograph quality. Next up the pre-weathering clear coat.

ACW as usual.

Andrew

Painting finished.....

Decals on......

Whilst not necessary I even put the cut out roundel pieces on the gun bay covers for when they are flipped over!

Coming on really nicely Andrew.

That is looking very nice indeed. You've done Airfix and the 'true scale' proud.

Andy,
All looking very nice indeed. I trust you are feeling better.

Very nice work Andrew 🫡

Typhoon is looking very good Andrew 👍

Afternoon chaps!!

Sorry for not being around much but the weekends is the only time I can seem to get on and then not even that much!

So more progress this week, with some light weathering (Flory Washes) and exhaust stains (a mixture of Vallejo game washes - black, light grey and umber).....and yesterday I managed to stick on all the sub assemblies, as you can see below. In fact I have just finished applying the final clear coat and am waiting for it to dry!

Oh and as you'll also see below, I will need a new sheet of lining paper for my spray booth!

ACW as usual.

Andrew

Time for a change of lining paper, me thinks.....
