Its the NATO reporting name system jim . Fighters and ground attack get names beginning with F ( frogfoot , fishbed , fresco etc ) Bombers beginning with B ( bear , blackjack etc) cargo beginning with C , helicopters H ,and miscellaneous M ( usually reconnaissance or electronic watfare - ie mandrake , mainstay )
It continues right up to the present with the latest Su 57 getting the sinister name Felon .

As for the ASCC reporting names, it's interesting how many of them were happily adopted by the Russians and co. after the fall of the Wall. Flankers and Fulcrums and Havocs (oh my). And then the Czechs started painting m issile toting frogs on the tails of their Su-25s#
