I do have a couple of 'normal' kits on the back burner, but I've been spending a lot of time recently with my other builds.

This is what I've completed from job lots bought on ebay:

And these are the ones I'm still waiting parts for (the more observant of you will spot several places where the mice have been nibbling, and I haven't set out the minifigures that I've got for this lot):

Lots of fun but listen up folks! I really think you guys shouldn't complain about the price of kits, or more especially, the price of AM stuff. Compared to the cost of this Lego stuff, our models are really dirt cheap.

As far as AM parts are concerned, try comparing what you get in a typical AM set with a typical Lego Minifigure - particularly the rare ones. I've seen them sell for over £150, which for a dozen bits of relatively plainly moulded plastic (OK, some of the paint jobs are particularly good) is ludicrous.

As for spare parts, I was looking for one particular part on a website that specialises in sourcing Lego spares worldwide. No names but one shop wanted about £15 for a part that another shop on the same website sold me for 2p!

Anyway, that's what I've been doing in my spare time for the last couple of months.

PS Is it just me or do I sniff a vague scent of some sort of bias towards Star Wars stuff?

Pity the Star Destroyer is not to the same scale as the Falcon - now that would be an impressive Lego kit

Great stuff Dave and a trip down memory lane having built a lot of these with my son a few years back. And you're right, they're very expensive - that must be a few hundred pounds worth sitting there.

Lego brings back memories. When my son was young he collected loads of Lego. He got it for birthdays and Christmas and spent his pocket money on it. When girls and beer became his main interest he gave the whole lot to the younger brother of a girl he was 'interested' in. Would be worth a bob or two now.
That is a great collection.

nice collection! I went from wooden building blocks to Bayko - really showing my age there - and then Meccano - Lego was never on the scene, for some reason...............

I love Lego, but unfortunately my kids have outgrown it.

I was never one to buy a kit and follow instructions though, I like to let my imagination run wild and build whatever I fancy (which was usually sleek looking space fighters). :smiling3:

Thanks guys. I know what you mean when you talk about 'Memory Lane' - that's precisely why I build Lego kits. Brings back many happy memories of when I was a kid.

What's the problem with that? Nowt stopping you buying it for yourself - your kids already know you like playing with bits of plastic! What difference does it make if they come out of a Lego box instead of a Tamiya, Revell, or Airfix one?

Some years ago, a friend of mine said that she hoped her daughter (who was two or three or so at the time) was going to like Lego, because then she (my friend) would get to play with it as well again. You seem to be much the same And Dave’s reply above is pretty much what I told her as well, except for the modelling references that is.

You could say that Peter. I've just spent the day pricing up just the Minifigures - there's about £300 worth in the picture, and I've got about another £250 to find for the ones I'm missing. That's based on average used prices on ebay.

I TOLD you they were expensive - but you already knew that. I'm off to try and price up the kits.

Ah yes, Bayko, with those sharp piano wire spikes just waiting to poke yer eye out! D'you remember Brickplayer, with "real" bricks and cement (actually it was wallpaper paste) that you could dismantle by soaking in water?

Bayko - you could only make suburban semis! I know, because you could make a pretty fair copy of our house - I remember Brickplayer, but never had a go with it. My brother had 'Arkitex' which I seem to remember could only make 60's Office Blocks!

I’d never heard of Brickplayer, but it sounds very similar to something my brother and I did play with called Brick Box:

The grey card strips were to simulate mortar, and it all went together with PVA glue so you could take it apart again by soaking it in the sink.

I was chatting to a guy at an IPMS show a while ago, he told me he puts all his kits together with PVA, so if he enjoyed the build he can soak it, take it apart, and do it all again!

So anyway, I priced up the main kits using the same sort of average values on ebay. About £650 - which is only about twice what the figures are worth! I think I'll start selling the sets of minifigures at three times what they're fetching and throw in the actual kit for free!

Time for a little 'Spot the Difference' competition. Usual rules, spot the only difference between these:

I'm not going to insult you guys on this as you're all pretty good with dealing with tiny details - right?

The top image has black pupils, the bottom one has white pupils.

Insignificant you'd have thought. Not so my friends. Each of these belongs to a specific figure included only in specific sets - even though with the helmet on, you can see NOTHING of the face! Woe betide the poor sap who sells a set as '100% complete' if he sells it with the wrong one. Lego collectors include 'rivet counters' among their number just as we do. I just don't want to fall foul of one if there's money involved (There's a special Edition Boba Fett figure with painted arms selling for around £250. The normal version without the painted arms sells for about £3).

Of course, I have the one with black pupils so guess which one I need for my set. OK, you guessed! I'm gonna have to shop around a little though, as the only ones with white pupils on ebay at the moment are in the USA and would set me back best part of £25!

But suppose I search for a Lego Darth Vader on ebay. The image I'll see will most likely be this:

Without reading every detail on the sale notice, how do I know which one I'm getting? And if it doesn't specify, how many times will I need to email sellers to find out?

And LOTS of the more popular characters have similar variations. My version of the Lego Visual Dictionary lists 28 different versions of Luke Skywalker - and I think mine dates back to 2014.

And I thought this would be a nice, relaxing hobby to take me back to my childhood a little bit! Ho hum!

PS. Can I come back to you guys who only have simple problems to solve - like just what shade of Olive Drab do I need for .....
