I abandoned the kit heads and ordered a Hornet set, only to find that they were slightly too big. I think the first two figures look OK, but I may not use the one with the coffee pot, which is a poorer sculpt anyway. These figures needed a lot of cleaning up, and for that reason I'm not 100% sure they'll work out. We'll see how it goes....

Are these the hornet or the original heads?
I'm sorry to say I think the problem is that all the heads are too big- especially coffee pot man- maybe his arms are too short as well, or maybe he wouldn't look so bad with a smaller head?
I hate to be critical , but I know I couldn't be as critical as you are with yourself.....
I think they just need smaller heads, with longer necks, which would save them from the bin....

Hi Neil. These are the Hornet heads - the original heads weren't very good. I take your point and agree with you, so these will be put to one side. I've ordered some more figures by Sovereign 2000, which should be better - two mechanics to crew the Protze and three tank crew:

Morning Peter
Hornet heads can be variable in size even in one pack of 5, and it is quite often a mix and match to find a head that fits the body and has the expression you might be looking for too.
Hopefully you will find a reasonable compromise with your heads and figures
Have a good day with the base and don't overdo the small painting.
The Pz II looks super too, nothing wrong with it at all.

A nice touch of Verlinden on a Peter Day style of finish. Very neatly done. I haven't seen this kind of finish for years which got me deviating to armour. Your dry brushing also reminds me of Tony Greenland's style...I wonder whats happened to him. These were the guys before Jiminez, Rinaldi and Stutchinkas set a new trend of finishing. I still like the old method and dable and mix with the latest.

Peter, have you tried Brodi heads? They're smaller than Hornet and I have both just in case I run into the same problem as you have with off scaled figures.

Richard - Funny how fashions change. In the early days, airbrushing was rare and there were no specialised weathering pigments - just paint and brush, the only things I'm at all comfortable with. I agree that a personal amalgam of all available methods is the way to go - sort of pic n mix.
I haven't tried other head sets and to be honest, I don't intend to make a habit of 1/35. I find the scale too small for my eyes these days, so it's not worth building up a box of spares.

The Protze is actually bigger than the tank. The base is an old one and locates the action to a fairly arid environment, such as the Balkans in summer. I intend to add a bit more dust to the vehicles with pastel to help them sit better. Three to five figures are planned, hence the empty spaces.
I may put this to one side now, as the figures haven't arrived yet, and anyway, they'll have to be done over a period of time to avoid eye strain.

Interestingly, if I Google his name, I get almost nothing but hits for his books — well, that and a Facebook page that’s apparently (I didn’t check, for reason of it being Facebook) listing people named Tony Greenland so you can find the one you’re after. I had kind of expected some hits for pages about him rather than his works as well.
